13 Week EE Injured (17 wks now) ~Vet Update Not Good~ *Graphic Pics *

yay!!!I'm glad that dead tssues came off! That pocket of infection was why I was afraid of that skin being black...but it sounds like it's all going to be ok now! :) Good job! And yay Jenny! Keep up the good work! And the updates too of course! ;-)

Yay! Very glad to read the last updates.

You're doing a great job!

Agreed with the punctures. You said "the skin that had seemed like it was going to be a gaping hole on her face, started shrinking and closing in on itself, becoming harder to see what I was doing." - that's what you want to keep it from doing,a ctually. Up inside there is where you'll irrigate. Syringes are perfect for this, as is saline just like Farrier so wisely said. Thats probably what happened the first time.

I'm delighted that the pocket of nasty of stuff came out. Good riddance!!! Now to keep it out like you were working on last night. Wonderful. Oh and I bet it did stink in a way you'll never forget. lol So bad, but really you have to kind of laugh at it and go on.

I'm very glad that black bit came off. Now to keep that open so whatever still gets produced in there drains (and gets cleaned) out.

YAY!!

p.s. and yes, I actually read the update but I was so tired when I wrote that I didn't realize that was the night before. /sigh Silly me. >.>

I'm so glad she's moving foreward! All too often after such an attack the opposite happens- and it's usually a bad ending. But, you're tenatious, and a dedicated mom! Sounds like your girl is lucky to have you, some would have culled by now.

Keep up the good work! And keep us posted!

Well, I've got good and bad news tonight...The left side lump that I was taking care of last night, looks pretty good. There's still some icky stuff in there that I'm working on getting out, but it's coming along. I packed a bunch of Neosporin in it. Hopefully, that'll help it stay open.

The bad news...she's got a lot of new swelling on her right side. This is the eye that has been weeping so continuously. The swelling was not there last night. And, unfortunately, I was only able to tend her once today, so I don't know exactly when it started swelling. It's pretty bad. I'm posting pics below so you all can see and hopefully give me some ideas on what, if anything, I can do about it.

I'm not holding out much hope for her vision in this eye at this point. I don't understand why it was seeming to do better and now all of a sudden it's all swollen and obviously has pus in it again. The discharge from her eye does not smell the way the gunk does from the other side. The swelling is so bad, it's swollen into her mouth and she can't closer her beak again. I'm even a bit concerned about her airway. Although, she is breathing fine and I really don't think it'll swell all the way to the other side of her mouth.

Here's a crazy thought...could I take a syringe and drain some of this out? I still have some that I was using for the antibiotic. Oh and in addition to draining from her eyes, there is a lot draining from her nose. That does smell bad.

Ugh, just when things were starting to seem like we were on the home stretch with the healing.

you know with so much stress your bird has had (and the time of year) it weakens them and I am wondering if this swelling isn't wet pox > if so you can swab the inside of beak that is swollen with iodine ... flush the eyes with sterile saline and give three-four drops polyvisol in beak for a couple weaks .

You can take a sterile needle and make a hole in a low area of that pus pocket. Make it big enough to drain. On larger animals a vet will often lance it open.
Flushing to keep a wound open is better then packing but because you could not do the flushing packing for a day was a good alternative.

I do not have a clue about chicken pox. I hope this is just a sealed over infection thatneeds to drain.....

It's obvious you're attached to this chicken. Perhaps more now, since the injuries, than before. Why don't you just take her to a vet?
