13 Week EE Injured (17 wks now) ~Vet Update Not Good~ *Graphic Pics *

You DO have a cheering team! I think that part of what makes us human is the fact that we can empathize, and sympathize. When people with a heart see someone who is dedicated, determined, and tireless in their efforts to do a good thing, we all want to be a part of it.
You are surrounded, through the miracle of technology, by a group that can enter your home and watch you care for this little feathered being. We can all jointly root for your success, share your setbacks, and admire your stamina. Not all of us could do it, but we'd all like to think we would.
I think it is the multitude of small kindnesses and love that we extend to others and the gifts we're endowed with, including all the animals we have, that makes us especially human.
We can never be too kind. In the grand scheme of things, one chicken might not seem to be that big of a deal. But it is all of the little things that are the sum of the grand scheme. Thank you for reminding all of us that it's the little things that are important. No matter how this all ends, we're all a little better for watching this sweet little life drama. It's our PLEASURE to join you!

You can get probiotics at most drugstores, specifically a brand called Culturelle. It's the one probiotic that has been tested and approved by the FDA. There is a wide range of them available, but this is the one brand that actually passed muster. I hope your chicken keeps improving.

I would guess she is trying to "back" away from something (dried pus clump) in her mouth or nose. All that icky will be also draining into her nose from her eyes. It may have plugged a tear duct.
I could sure tell you how to clean a horse's tear duct but no clue on a bird.

Without rereading (need more coffee for that!) do you have a light for warmth in her hospital area? She very well can have a fever from fighting the infections and could use some warmth so she is not using calories just to keep warm. Of course you then may need to get even more liquid into her to keep her hydrated.

I been reading this since Sunday. I'm not the email or computer kind of person, but it's one of the first things I do each day. I just have to know how she is progressing. Keep up the good work, and keep fighting for her. I had a horse that was sick for a month. If I wasn't working or sleeping I was out with them. Even kept a log of everytime he drank or took a pee or poo. I know how exhasting it is, but as long as they want to keep going so do you. I highly commend you on all your hard work and heart that you've put into her. She is very lucking to have you as her owner. There's not many out there that would go to the lengths you have.
Good luck to you both

I'm guilty of being one of those who can't wait for the updates.

Great updates at that, today! The sleeping more normally is good. The making at least a little effort to eat, also good. Honey, eh?

Spoiled much? >

On the backing up, I think she's trying to figure out her sight. Maybe her balance, too, if ears have anything to do with chicken balance? (Still haven't looked that one up - I'm a slacker.)

Hmm on the food I'd think so, yes. Just set it out 30 minutes before you serve it maybe? I have a swallow I'm raising - or just finished raising and, like you, I'd make food and refrigerate it. To help warm it, I'd make it without water and then - just before serving, mix it with enough hot water to warm it. I'd do that rather than microwave because microwaving tends to kill off more good bacteria if your probiotic is mixed in already, and tends to leave patches of scalding hot food that could burn a crop. Good lessons from having to handfeed a parrot once.

So it all sounds wonderful! I hope the weather improves for you (both) soon.

I've been lurking but I need to come out and tell you what an amazing job you are doing. I nursed a sick guinea pig for 6 weeks and it was exhausting. Round the clock feedings were exhausting and it was an emotional roller-coaster with her health going up and down. What you are doing is HARD and admirable.

My vet offers probiotics for pets who are taking antibiotics. It comes in a goopy gel that you just kind of smear on their lips and they lick it off, it's very easy to administer. There's also this stuff called "critical care" that I might consider mixing in with a sick chickens feed. I might be totally wrong, no one has ever given me a clear answer on wheather or not this is a good idea. Here's a link to "critical care".
