13 Week EE Injured (17 wks now) ~Vet Update Not Good~ *Graphic Pics *

Sounds like you've got the wound under control.

For the eyes, thoroughly wash them with a saline solution. Same thing that contact users use. You can get a cheap Walmart or generic version. Don't actually touch the eye with the tip of the bottle, but spray it good, and see if some of the goop isn't washed out. You'll probably have to repeat this twice a day for a few days.

Get some antibiotic ointment from a feed store. Most sell a small tube called Terramycin for around $8. After cleansing the eyes, put about 1/4'' into each eye. Try to at least get some in the eye. I know it's hard with a chicken. Again, you'll probably have to repeat twice a day after the cleansing.

Most likely the vision isn't damaged YET, but you want to get the eyes cleaned well, and treated as soon as possible.

BEST OF LUCK!!

Oh, and you can add Poly Vi Sol as well. A few drops to the corner of the beak twice a day, for about a week, and then once a day for a week. That will add some vitamins the chick might be missing while not eating well.

Since she's not able to see right now, you might want to offer her a wet feed for a bit. You can try some of the chicks feed mixed with milk into a crumble. A hard boiled boiled, or scrambled egg. Both would be good for her. Even her favorite treats at this point, just to get her eating!

Thanks so much for the input and good wishes. i was able to get her to drink more today and eat a little egg. She's still not doing a lot of either, but we're making progress. I picked up some of terramycin and have given her a first dose. I'm not sure how much I actually got in there, because they're so crusty, but I figure any little bit helps. I will keep working on her and continue to update on her progress.

Hey All, Just wanted to share a minor victory. I was cleaning out her eyes this evening and managed to get a whole bunch of goo our of one of her eyes. She really didn't like it, but, it made it clean enough that I was actually able to get some ointment in the eye itself. I'm really hoping for some real improvement now. I'm hoping I can do the same thing to the other eye tomorrow.

Lolliegee glad to hear your hen is improving. Sounds like she'll be as good as new soon and you are doing a great job at being a chicken nurse!

You might also be able to get terramycin ointment from the feedstore. A lot of our local feedstores carry it. It's pricey, but just a little bitty bit of ribbon does the job.

I did manage to clean out her other eye today. I think she passed out afterward. She became very limp, but was still breathing. She did the same thing when I cleaned out her eye yesterday too. Poor thing, but I really think relieving all the pressure has gotta do some good.

I sure hope sure shows a little more improvement soon. She still not eating or drinking on her own. I have to help her every time. I also realized today that her nose was infected too (I knew she had a small cut above one of her nostrils, but it didn't seem too bad originally) and she is only breathing through her mouth.

The good thing is that she doesn't seem in pain, unless I'm working on cleaning her eyes. Otherwise, she just sleeps a lot, with period times of standing and moving around a little bit.

I'll let you know if there's any more improvement tomorrow.

I got some of the Poly Vi Sol today and am not sure what you mean by putting the drops to the corner of the beak? With the water I'm giving her with the syringe, I'm putting it directly in her mouth. Why wouldn't I do that with the vitamins as well?

You might want to give her some antibiotics as well. If the infection travels and causes swelling, pressure that is happening inside her will cause her to stress and get worse. You want to prevent an upper respiratory problem. I am not sure what type of antibiotic would be the best. (I only know for humans)
maby froggie71 or NotTheMomma would know.
I hope your chickie gets better soon!
Good Luck!
