16 Days Old and Impacted Crop!?

Hi everyone!! My little baby Pepper Potts is OK!!!!!! Her crop was totally clear this morning!!!!! I barely slept last night from the worry so after I woke up and checked her I passed out again in bed and slept 4 more hours! :)

But I think this is a case of the New Mommy Panics! I am so new to chicks and chickens that I have a LOT to learn. Everything freaks me out! But I think for safety sake we will continue to remove their food at night and I am just giving them water with electrolytes, no other additives (i.e. Nutri Drench).

Thank you all for the support and help and lovely comments. It means so much that I found this community of support as my babies grow. I hope this post can be support for other new moms. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello! Is your little chick alright? Xxxx :D -Buffy

Thinking about her :)

Thank you so much TheCuteOrpington!!! Pepper Potts is CLEAR!!! That crop was totally empty this morning! Never have I felt such relief! I just posted a longer reply but wanted you to know! THANK YOU!! Much love!!!

This may not be a crop bound issue like you see with adults. Rather the digestive tract lower down may be shutting down. Age of chick consistent with where I see coccidiodosis kicking in.

Hi, thank you for the information. I don't think there is a problem cause her crop is totally clear this morning. I also have them on medicated feed for coccidia and they were vaccinated. I change their bedding every day, give fresh water and food 2x a day. All of them are chirping and running around like normal.

Thanks but I think we are out of the woods now!

Watch closely. Impacted crops with young birds unusual.

Hi, yes but I don't think it was impacted cause it drained really well overnight. I think it was just a shock to see it cause I am still learning chicken anatomy. But I am watching her VERY closely!! I will go to the vet if there is any issue.

I really appreciate your comments and help!!! THANK YOU!

You are indicating nothing that indicates rapid recovery. Normally the crop empties within a few hours of filling with chicks.

I could not monitor her all night at them expense of every other chick in the brooder (I have 6 chicks) so I chose to let her sleep and see if it was empty. It was empty at 5:30am when I checked so this seems very normal. I am not sure why you keep trying to tell me there is a problem? Please, I am asking nicely and politely, refrain from trying to tell me there is something else wrong when all signs point to normal crop health.

I do appreciate your concern but it seems like you might be trying to start some argument here and I do not want to engage in that with someone who has not seen my chick and is not a Vet. If you are a Vet, thank you for your professional , educated opinion. If you are NOT a Vet, I believe I am the best judge at this stage on my chicks health.

The observations as related to in your postings in the beginning in were indicative of something wrong. You appear to learning with this as you progress. I assumed initially you had more experience.

I do train students where some ultimately become vets or medical doctors. My training is explicitly in the animal sciences when it comes to function of the digest tract.

Otherwise I shall step away.

I did not undertake this new journey with baby chicks lightly. I have been planning for this for 2 years. I have read voraciously about chicken anatomy but I am not a professional...like 90% of the people on these forums! I don't take any of this lightly, I am constantly monitoring my chicks and giving them the absolute best possible start. Maybe I didn't express myself well in my first post and I am sorry if that set off alarms with more experienced owners like yourself. I am a newbie but am doing everything possible to ensure my chicks are healthy and happy.

You are clearly more experienced and I really do appreciate your help. I just don't think its very helpful at this point to say I didn't do the right thing last night. I just followed my instincts and let her sleep. I am unable to monitor them 100% of the time because I also have to sleep (I work fulltime and I have 2 children) so I can participate in my life.

Now I know that I need to closely monitor all 6 chicks crops and be hyper alert to their proper drainage. Again, thank you for the concern and information.
