18 chickens lost today

What a disaster. Do you have some kind of fencing, at least for the chickens, because this is likely to happen again. Any dog that walks by is going to head right over.

its so unfortunate because they are only doing what their instincts and our training tell them to do. im sorry for your loss but am also feeling pained for the owner who entrusted his dog to someone else. if it wasnt you who had shot it, it wouldnt been someone else.

so sad

Dealt with this three times since April so I think you taught a harsh lesson in good time. I didn't and I'll never know if I could've prevented the following two attacks. Better your way.

Sorry about your birds. I have a bird dog. She is 2. Sometimes she gets out and goes for the chickens. I just about have to drag her off point but she has never hurt one. Yep she points the chickens.

#1 - Hate to hear about the loss of your birds.
#2 - Good shooting.
#3 - A bird dog pointing chickens is a must have picture. Stevo needs to post one.

I'd certainly be demanding restitution from the "dog trainer". He is 100% liable for allowing an animal in his care to get loose. I am sure the owner of the dog will be demanding compensation for the his dog. I'd strive for as much as I could get for each lost bird (replacement and loss of egg availability).

I'm so sorry about you chickens!

You were, of course, totally within your rights and something needed to be done then and there. Good shot.
The sad thing is here, everyone loses. You lost your pets. The dog, while doing 'wrong', was only doing what it was probably half trained to do and lost it's life. The dog's owner, through no fault of his own, lost his bird dog and companion (and these dogs are not cheap!). The trainer is going to be out $$$ and most likely his reputation will suffer. A sad series of events no matter how you look at it.
A dang shame.

The "trainer" neighbor has yet to get back in touch with me. I can fill a page on what I feel about that guy right now. I went over to his place, his kennel where he is keeping/training about 10-12 dogs. In this hot as hell summer days in Ga, the dogs are in bad shape. No water, no food, no shelter from the elements. They are all skinny and starved. I have a call out to my local animal enforcement about the conditions of this so called kennel. There are many holes in the runs in attempts of the poor dogs trying to dig their way out of the hell hole the guy have forced them into. No wonder that poor dog got my chickens, he was starved. I've got pictures of the condition of the dogs & kennels. Sad that something like this occurred. Sad for me for the loss of my pets, the owner of the dog, the money we both lose and the poor creatures that are trained to go after birds....any bird it looks like.
Yes I took a head count, I do have survirors. 12 hens and 2 roosters. But they are so scared, and unlikely they will lay any time soon. I was getting about 20 eggs a day before the attack, now I won't.
As for my own conditions, I have about 20 acres. 6 horses in a very nice barn with paddocks and 4 large pastures that are used daily. The chicks are free range, and roost in the barn, nice, warm, dry and well cooled with three fans going at all times. I had had no dog attacks before, as the horses are not nice to them and generally kept critters in check.
Pity us chicken owners who only want peace & quiet to raise our chicks without harm.

Do something to help those poor animals,Call your local animal control and report this person.Don't let this abuse continue,And what kind of owner would leave his dog in a situation such as that,,I'm sorry for your loss,Ita a shame that animals and people have to suffer because of one persons heartless care of animals
