Where in Nebraska are you? I lived in Omaha for 22 long years. Love being in Missouri. Live in the country on 2 acres, hence the space for my chickens. If the price of chicken feed keeps going up & up I won't be able to keep so many. But I do so enjoy them.

The first one is my littlest silkie (micro?), then I'm not sure who layed the 2nd, 3rd is my blonde Easter Egger (it is green) and then, the last was layed today by the other EAster Egger..... oh, I'd never seen anything prettier than that. My last girl is laying! My rainbow of eggs. Great Christmas gift!
That is so pretty! I need to get some blue egg layers. Some of our ducks just starte laying green eggs an they are wonderful. :)

I lived in Lincoln, NE for 18 years; was raised in the central part of the state. I'm in CA now.

My Delawares are at the 20 week mark now. They've been making egg sounds out in the yard, so we've decided to keep them confined in the run/coop until they give me an egg. I keep watching! What is the thought on putting a fake egg in the nests? I don't have that, but it looks like they've been readjusting the straw in three of the four boxes. I don't know if I'm being premature or should just relax til they're closer to 24 weeks. I just don't want them to get in the habit of laying in the yard because I'd never find the eggs then! :-o

We got our first egg out of one of our 29.5 week EEs. I know it's an EE as it's minty green and all the other girls are brown layers (according to breed charts). Sorry if you have seen this elsewhere, I am so excited I am dancing around!!

Even though my older birds are use to laying in the nest boxes, I still keep a "golf ball" in the boxes for any newbies. I think they mostly follow the example of the older girls, but it doesn't hurt to use something that gives them the right idea.

Ok... so I thought the little green egg I got yesterday was from our bantam, because it's the same size as the ones our other bantam lays, but this morning I got a 1oz egg that was totally a different colour!

Here are the eggs we're getting now

The middle one is the same egg we've been getting almost every day since Phantom started laying them. We're sure they are phantoms because we've seen her lay them and the's the oldest. Of the other 3 that aren't roosters, only 1 is a bantam. Could one of the standards be laying the green egg??? It's only 1.3oz, same size as the bantam!

Also, is the 1oz egg a bantam, or could it be a standard too??? Help???

Oh, absolutely a standard hen can lay a 1 oz egg! When our hens started laying, we got several peewee eggs (between 1.25 and 1.5 oz), and some even smaller. Practice eggs. I'm told that size makes great egg creams.

I can't remember the size of the smallest egg we weighed (that wasn't a "fart" egg) ... probably less than an ounce. I think the biggest egg we got was 3.1 oz ... Jumbo starts at 2.5 oz.

Our eggs are getting bigger the past few weeks as our hens continue to mature. But the sizes still vary day-to-day. It isn't always easy to figure out which egg is from the one bantam that's laying once they're all in the basket together. And some of our chicken eggs are bigger eggs than the duck's eggs!

It's all so amazing.
