19 and a half weeks old and still no eggs :( egg countdown anyone??

i have one red sex link hen that im planing on getting rid of shes 24 or 25 weeks old and no egg from her. she just stairs at her three sisters while they lay. they have ben laying since they were 17 - 18 weeks old. im going to an animal swap on thursday. to get rid of her and get two more to make 10. it might end up being 4 so i have a dozzen hen. darn chicken math. even i cant stay away from it. ive already had to add on once. i fist planed on four hens. right now i have 9.

Hm, 25 weeks still isn't the latest I've heard of hens laying and actually I've heard 28 weeks is a normal late layer...there are folks on here who are 31 weeks and still waiting on their girls. I got lucky all mine layed before week 21.

sometimes it takes a while it also depends on how the chickens are doing my girls started laying at 19 and a half weeks and have not stopped since a few of them have not started laying im getting 23 eggs a day from 55 laying hens so some breeds take a while to lay just give it time

that's not necessarily late its on time for most, Sex Links usually start early, and it's not always "good for them" can cause more reproductive issues. I still have one of four that is just now starting to mature(comb and wattles reddening getting bigger,squatting etc) her sisters are laying beautiful eggs for a few weeks now but, I'm sure shell catch up, mine are 23 weeks old yesterday. Might want to hold off on the swap, getting more strangers could upset everyone and cause other issues coming into winter now? just a thought, sometimes swaps can be where people unload their problem birds? I'm paranoid to take the risk of introducing a disease to my girls, and stress from adding new chickens and a germ could be risky!!

that is true sometimes they just take a while my sex links are awesome and im getting 23 eggs a day out 55 girls so as i said earlier it takes a while for some of them to catch up with the rest and yes the swap is were most people get rid of their problem bird to make sure you have no problems with new birds you should put it on quarantine for at least 40 days and if it does not give youany problems you should be able to put it in your flock

Wow, that's wierd! Maybe they're worse when theres more than one of them? Daisy's my only Leg...Maybe they get the gang mentality when there's more of them...

I don't know what was up with those particular White Leghorns. It was sad, though.

They are pretty birds and I was excited about the egg-laying potential.

It was our first chicken experience, and we got a LOT of birds, in two batches. We kept thinking we were overcrowding them, and giving them more and more space. But even when they were out in the humongous coop, the WLHs were pecking everyone else. So we put the WLHs in a big "naughty cage" inside the coop and the pecking problems outside the cage disappeared. Inside the cage ... they managed to kill one of their own.

Every time we tried to let the WLHs out, they ran around attacking everyone else.

It's interesting ... the Brown Leghorns are flighty but don't cause problems ... and the BLH rooster is our top cock. Right now the only hens that seem to have any kind of "mean streak" are the Buff Orpington hens -- they'll peck when on the roosts or near the food, but don't seem to chase another bird to peck. It's funny because the BO rooster is a total sweetiepie, though he doesn't have a lot of luck with the hens. Luckily we have a lot of roosting space and lots of feeders and a good mixture of indoor and outdoor places for the birds to spread out during the day.

One cute positive thing that came out of the busy hospital cages ... we tried to keep at least two birds in each hospital cage so they could keep each other company. Now, the birds we paired up in hospital are best buddies. It is cute to see them taking care of each other like that.

I got my first egg today!!!!!



I feel exactly like this little guy!!

My Golden Comet laid a perfect, unblemished brown egg. It's gorgeous.

blondiebee, those are beautiful! that's what I want to do with my first eggs... and I have a new bantam cochin x EE cross hen, but she hasn't laid an egg here yet... only been a week since the move and I don't know how old she is... could be awhile before I get one... I want to use her eggs for decorations.
