19 and a half weeks old and still no eggs :( egg countdown anyone??

Just jumping in for some encouragement for those still waiting on first eggs from a large first flock: Mine started laying less than 4 weeks ago and in that time I've gone from 1 egg a day to 7 eggs a day, with 8 girls currently laying. It happens quick! I'm still waiting on our 9th big girl to start laying, and 2 more 14 week olds. Then I should be set! So exciting with each day of egg increases ;)

its nice to be able to get more i started with 4 or 5 a day now im getting 18 to 21 eggs a day

It is hard to imagine that just a few weeks ago we weren't sure we'd ever actually get eggs, and now we get almost 2 dozen a day! I think all the breeds are laying (except the Cuckoo Marans), but not all the birds in each breed. The Golden Sexlinks are the stars of the coop ... big eggs now, they were early layers, and they don't seem to cause much trouble or get upset about anything -- middle of the pecking order, not super friendly, but not flighty either. We'll get more of those next spring.

Like Nelson says, we're getting a lot of beginner eggs. More of the little ones than we can eat and they're really too little to sell. They are a nice mix of colors from medium brown to buff to almost pink, white, and sage green eggs from the few EEs laying and the one duck. I can't wait for the one Cuckoo Marans to lay, I really want a deep brow egg. Some blue eggs would be nice, too! Next purchase I'm hoping for some speckled egg layers. And some of those olive eggs would also be really cool! I'm all about the pretty eggs.

I took a dozen practice eggs to the new neighbor. She hadn't seen the green eggs before. She got all excited even though they were peewee sized.

Yes me, awaiting eggs from 6 hens , mine are 5 and a half months. Have found baby eggs now and then so ,Abe they are starting, I,have to watch 'ore closely. Glad luck to both of us

Mind if I join the waiting list?

I am also brand new to chickens and jumped in with both feet with some adorable day-old chicks on Mothers Day this year. I've begged hubby for years, and he always said NO! So I kept begging until he got tired of me. I promised I would keep the flock small. I only wanted 3. I fell victim to chicken math early. My justification was this: what if some die? what if a few are roosters? and the ever popular **oooh! that one is soooo cute!!*** I went with a nice little mixed flock of 3 Americaunas, 3 Black Sex-Links, 3 Buff Orpingtons, 2 Production Reds and a Barred Rock my neighbor's daughter calls the zebra chicken. That is a total of 12. So much for 3 ;)

At first, I admit, I had selfish motives: I did it for the eggs - who knew in a matter of days I'd be certifiable! Those little darlings are as spoiled rotton as they would be if they were my kids! (In fact, I think my teenager is getting jealous)

I've read trough this entire topic and I think I have a few that are getting ready for eggs. I have brilliant red combs and a couple are doin' the squat......its got to be any time now, right? Please tell me I am not stalking them for nothing? Hubby thinks I am crazy - especially since I have fallen victim to chicken math again and am planning an order of 6 more in the spring! oh....and a family friend wants to give me her 5....not sure how 3 = 23, but the more the merrier, right???

chicken math made easy:

<~~ see the little hearts...? so, one chicken gives you 3 little hearts, so 3 chickens...

= your 3 chickens (original idea for a flock), but now you = 9...

= 27 chickens... so you have to tell your hubby that you are still 4 short... for your order for next spring...

Okay, four of my hens just passed the 21 week mark, and none of them is even TRYING to lay eggs. I have two who started laying end of July, and they are amazing--I've been getting an egg from each almost every day, and they are BCM, not Leghorns or anything. They don't make me breakfast. They are more of Brunch Chickens, as they like to lay between 11 and 2. But now that is immaterial, because one of them has gone broody! I couldn't be more thrilled with her, she is so serious about motherhood. I gave her 9 fertile Silkie eggs that I bought from sellers on this site, and she takes her job as a mommy very seriously. The problem is, I now have only one girl laying. So seriously, time for those other four to STEP UP. spoiled little princesses...
