Have you tried using an egg-timer? Hehehehehehe. Oh.

Sorry. Maybe you need to give them a boost of protein! Scrambled aggs for the chickens as well as maggots. My mother works with flies (she's a scientist) and we get heaps of larve! Also, a boost of calcium may be good (e.g. eggshell, seashell...um...other stuff?

Turkeys would be fun! I have no room at this point in the city, I'm pushing our limit as it is.....but someday. Mom would love to raise her own Thanksgiving bird sometime, and I would love to just have a couple around for entertainment....I hear their eggs are good too.....is there a certain breed that is good as a pet/egg layer?

Someone was telling us Royal Palms would be a good "keeper" breed. They have an interesting look, but I'm not sure it's my favorite look. Obviously, stay away from the "broad breasted" breeds.

Yea!!!! Got a beautiful egg today! My pet EE is the one I'm sure. Gave them cream of wheat with scratch mixed in for a reward! They are 25 1/2 weeks so hang in there all you expectant mom's!

I got a bit concerned last summer when my Golden Girls started loosing their large tail feathers, Frankie lost them all, Francine all but one of the long ones. I was told it was one of their final molts as a pullet, mind you they never had any bald spots, just those long tail feathers and a bunch of smaller ones. They told me pullets go through several molts from hatch to before they lay( i think 3?) Another coming of age closer to laying Milestone!!!!! Now the only feathers they are loosing are the ones they pull outta their own chests and undersides to line their nests.....they are 29.5 weeks old

I can now officially join this thread, the girls are 19 1/2 weeks and have laid no eggs yet

Now the guessing game is "who will be first"

- My guess is NOT the Australorps . They have very little red in their tiny combs. Though Zorra (my current avatar) is a big healthy looking girl.
- I noticed the comb (cushion/pea?) on one of the Cubalayas is getting bigger and more red but I think they are a slower maturing breed.
- I don't see anything suggesting the Partridge Chanteclers, Faverolles or Easter Eggers are ready.

Thus my guess is the Anconas. Zia's comb is getting red and starting to flop a little. Uwe's is still more pink and not quite as big as Zia's was when it started its fashionable droopy look.

I should have their community nest box finished tomorrow, just in case one wants to test it out by laying an egg in it.

Well, I FINALLY started getting some eggs this week! Now the question is, from whom??? Since Sunday, I've gotten 3 really lovely pale brown eggs, small but with a very full, rounded shape. Then today I got my first green/blue egg, and I think it came from the bird I thought had laid the pale brown ones! So I'm totally confused. I have a 27 week old Silkie mix, probably mixed with Ameraucana. That's who I think layed at least one of these eggs. Then I have a bantam Cochin the same age, but she's been busy playing nursemaid to a brood of chicks and I don't think she's even had access to the nesting boxes, as she's in a special pen with the babies. Other possibles: Two Lavender Ameraucanas 28 weeks old, and five 19.5-week-olds, one each of Barred Rock, GLW, BO, Delaware and EE. Can't wait to see what I find out there tomorrow!

Check out the size of this egg that Rascal laid today. It is by far her largest one yet. The egg carton doesn't want to close. I'm hoping for a double yoke.
