1st Time Incubating, Detached Air Sacs, Final Update on Detached eggs

Quote:
You got eggs today? And you are in Denver? We are in Utah and are having a cold spell as well. I'm really worried about my eggs now that are due to come, hopefully tomorrow. Did they feel really cold? I hope they will be ok. I have heard several people say that they order in the winter and have good hatches. It will be in the high 20's tonight.

Back to high 40's or low 50's during the day. They are coming from Texas.

I got them yesterday from Oklahoma. It said today because I posted after midnight (I don't sleep well and tend to be on BYC very late). It was colder then than today. The post office kept them and called me for pickup. I do think they were a little cold, but not worse than storing them before incubating would have been. I think if they had delivered them and they had sat in a cold truck or outside upon delivery, it would have killed them.

I was more worried about my house being not the appropriate storage temps so I didn't allow them to rest before incubating. But we'll see. I am not expecting much as this is my first hatching, so that way I don't get as disappointed if it goes wrong. But, I'm still hopeful for some chicks.

Not to be nosy (oh yes I am), what kind did you get?

So, I just couldn't wait and candled one of the first eggs I put in the incubator. It's ALIVE!!!!!! It was surprisingly (to me at least) clear that there was an eye and veins. I had to turn the egg to see it because it was on one side, but I could see the heart beating and everything.

I didn't think I could see that much at barely 5 days (really the end of the 4th day). So exciting!

So, then I was going to candle all of the first 9 I put in (including the detached air sac ones) and my light bulb in my candler blew out. Bummer. Have to get a new light bulb tomorrow.

I am getting some EE's, with some extra other chickens thrown in, she mentioned Favorelles, that are with some EE roos I do believe..I love the colored eggs..grand kids love them.

Did I see what you got? Can't remember. And, I have some Lavender splits going into lock down on Mon. Cochin Bantams. I'm excited for them They are soooo cute those cochin bantams.
I am going to share something that I do 24 hrs. after I have had my eggs in the bator. I candle them! With the ones that are easy to see through, unlike the ones that are pourus, I can always see some of the ones that are going to be viable. By 24 hrs..the bulls eye is easy to see in some. So, I get a pretty good idea if I am going to get any..then of course, day 4 and 5 really shows a lot. And hopefully more! lol.. So, congrats on your seeing the little eyeball! That's always fun. Then by day 7 they are usually swimming around in there pretty good.

I have 9 ee eggs and 8 coronation sussex and coronation/lt sussex splits.

The 4 that have detached air sacs are ee's. The one with the eye (and beating heart which was super cool) was ee. I have 3 ee's already although one's a slacker and isn't laying yet and I do think the blue and green eggs are super cool. My friends are fascinated as they never knew eggs came in other than white or brown.

It actually looked like one of the detached air sacs had reattached. I've been hesitant to take them out for too long because it's been cold here in the last couple of days and the incubator is having a hard time keeping up. Otherwise, I'd probably have been candling every day.

They're due to be weighed Monday which, hopefully, will give me some assurance that they're on track.

My granddaughter is going to be so thrilled. She's hoping she'll be here when they hatch (although I doubt it).

also, got BCM, and SF, and one egg said G..I had to ask her what that one stood for...lol..waiting for her response.

Congrats Cynthia. Hm, GI, gilded idiot, golden idol, good idea... Ok, now I'm wondering too. Or was it just G? Still don't know what it is though. Maybe just a good egg? And I'm blanking on SF; what's that? Oh, let me guess, salmon faverolle. How many did you get and who did you get them from? Nosy people (me) want to know.

Sadly, one of my ee eggs is weeping/leaking.

It is number 9 and, fortunately I guess, was one that had a detached air sac anyway. So, I'm waiting till I can get a new bulb for my candler (darn grocery store didn't have the right size, going to the hardware store tomorrow) and I'm going to candle it before I pitch it. Lucky for me I read about weeping eggs on another person's thread about their incubating eggs so I know it's a goner and am no longer worrying. If I can't get the right bulb tomorrow, I'm going to pitch it without waiting as I sure don't want it to pollute the others. Again lucky for me, I have it in its own little piece of egg carton so there is no danger of it touching anything else unless it explodes and I'm just going to get rid of the whole carton holder and all.

Get that weeping egg otta there! Serious. Yes, they can contaminate your other eggs. And, wash your hands after handling it, if you are going to turn or handle the others. Do it now..go..get it out. Now. There..are ya back from getting it out? Oh good.

The G stood for Game. It is a mix with an EE roo. hmmm....yes, SF is the Faverolle. All are mixed with an EE roo. So, will get some nice colored eggs, some may even come out more olive green. I'm excited to see how they look. Sounds like because of the Marans, I will be getting a lot of black chicks. That's ok, if I get some gals...I want to keep a few.
Now, are you sure you got that egg out????
