2 Frizzles with their eyes matted shut.

Sounds like the feedstore is not disinfecting its brooders and is passing along disease. Sounds a bit like Coryza because of the bad smell. Personally, I'd cull them and inform the store that they'd better pull the chicks out and do some serious disinfecting. They may be spreading this all over your area.

Speckled:

The frizzles came from a swap......

Have you talked to that person yet? I would also assume coryza because of the bad smell and would also cull.

The person that I bought the frizzles from, I also bought 2 jerseys and they are doing great.

I would hate to "cull" them if I don't have to. I want to heal them if possible. I went to another feed store that deals with equestrian and purchased the Terramycin eye gel ($$) today. When I got home I held a warm wash cloth on their eyes for about 30 seconds each and cleaned their eyes. I drained the puss out of their eyes, opened their eyelids and applied the gel into their eyes. The puss that came out of their eyes smelt very bad. However, I doctored them and put them back in their pen.

This evening (after about 5 hours) I noticed that they don't have near the swelling and they seem to have a little more spunk. Hopefully they will heal soon.

I will give them at least the weekend before I will start to think about culling them. I really don't want to kill them but I rather lose 3 birds than all of them.

Richard.

If it is coryza, they will be carriers for life. Any bird on your property will get this disease. Any new bird you bring onto your property will get it also.

How do I know if they have it?

Also, will all carriers show signs of the disease? or will a bird have the disease and pass it on to another bird and only the 2nd bird will get sick?

I did the neosporin and terramyacin treatment on my 10 month old hen with the same problem as you described - only one eye was "glued" shut though. OH, I also put very, very warm water on the eye until it opened, then put the neosporin on, in and around the eye. She perked up and is back with the main flock.

Sorry - I just read more carefully - my bird had no puss or smell from the eye. I meant to give you some hope - but your situations now sounds more serious.
Wash your hands and equipment - anything that comes near these sick chicks before entering the area of your other chickens.
Bummer.

Oh, I hope it isn't Corzya. Mine did NOT have a bad smell from the eye either and cleared up quickly. It sounds like you are doing all you can, what about vet RX for the respiratory symptoms? I have seen that mentioned. Is there a test to confirm Corzya?

I'm sorry, I missed the part about the swap. The solution is to cull, which is always my solution with respiratory illness (though I have never had any so far) I would not try to nurse any bird that came to me ill. Of course, this is why I do not buy birds from anyone. If it is Coryza, or certain other diseases, they will be carriers even if they seem to recover.

I have been putting a warm washcloth on their eyes for about 30 seconds each and forcing their eyes open to apply the Terramycin eye gel in both eyes. Also, I have been using the Terramycin powder in their water. This is been going on since Friday and I have noticed that 2 of them are having more energy and chirping a lot more, but the other seems to have a little more of a swollen look around one of it's eyes. I am going to try and drain the eye like I did with the black one and see if that helps. If not I may have to cull this one (I hate to do that though).

The smell seems to be the same smell of a dirty pen. I have been cleaning their pen every day but keep in mind that I have been using newspaper (due to I want to keep it clean and it's easier and less expensive than shavings). I hope this is a sign of them getting better.

Also to note, I have read that signs of Corzya is nasal drainage. I'm not sure what this is, but if their nasal passage is those bumps on top of their beaks, then they may NOT have it. Their nasal passage's seems to be clean and dry. Just the swelling around the eye and "glued" shut. The puss that was in their eye could have been on my neglect, as it was getting "puffy" before I started to treat them as I thought it would pass on it's on.

I didn't take pics of the white frizzle due to that it doesn't look like it's getting better.
