2 week polish bantam with crop/breathing issue

can I get some advice please? I have a 2 week old incubated polish bantam. It’s crops is large and squishy and never goes down (photo doesn’t show clearly) I’ve noticed that it intermittently stretches its neck and opens its beak as if gulping. Also, I can hear a feint crackling/clicking when breathing and some heavy breathing. Otherwise alert and active, eating, drinking, pooping as normal. Was very loud chirping tonight and wouldn’t settle down though for ages. Any ideas?

Chicks can have full crops most of the time since they tend to eat round the clock. If she sleeps at night in the dark, check it before she eats or drinks in the morning. If the chest feels like air under the skin, it could possibly be a ruptured air sac. I would observe her to see if that might be a problem.

Thank you. What do you think about the breathing? Is that something to be concerned about? I haven’t noticed it with the others…

The breathing may be a sign of respiratory distress. If it could be a ruptured air sac, a needle can be inserted by you or a vet to withdraw air under the skin. This video shows withdrawing air from a peachick’s ruptured air sac:

I removed the food at bedtime and had a look at the crop in the morning and it was empty, so good to know it is emptying. Chest felt the same as the others too. Still eating and drinking and active but I’ll keep an eye on her!
