2010 MN Swap Dates

I get mine in Hutchinson at the MN Game Breeders swap to avoid the shipping costs. I buy like 300 of those aluminum bands in the size 22 and up to 10 boxes of the size 9 plastic bandettes. I usually end up cleaning them out of whatever they bring along to stock up for the whole year. Its Smith Poultry Supply based out of Bucyrus KS.... Their e-mail is [email protected] and their website is www.poultrysupplies.com. I would highly recommend these people! I have bought from them for years and they are always top in service. I bought new wafers at this last swap and they explained to me how to put them in, how to regulate my incubator again, etc. They know what they are talking about and you aren't just reaching some clerk that has never touched a bird before.
* if you are looking at the more permanent aluminum bands that I get, they aren't on their website. Just have to call/e-mail them. They come in all colors too. $20 for 100 and they look really classy.

I am also a huge fan of this site: www.cutlersupply.com . Excellent service and great products! Lil bit more expensive on some things. I looked and the bandettes are $7.45 for 25. Compare that to Smith's at $5.75 for the same thing.....

Ya never know. It starts at 7:00am and most of the good deals are done by 7:01am or sooner. That is my only problem with the shows and swaps. I like to sleep in on Sunday mornings

From what I've heard about Pierz, its one of your basic exotic auctions. I have gone to the ones in IA on a regular basis. Sometimes you find good deals, but prices can go through the roof. Guineas of all things went up to $37 each and extreme PQ calls over $50. You don't really see much of the birds before they go through the ring. Its definitely buyer beware. You might find a box labeled layer hens that are actually 4-5 years old and probably won't lay much. Sometimes you can find a decent deal. We've gotten a couple donkeys, a goat, and even 2 parrots at these auctions. If you are looking for anything showable, probably not the best place... If you just want some backyard pets, make sure and quarantine because you don't quite know what they are carrying. Swaps are a lil better in terms of being able to see what you are buying.

As for finding ducks....it will all depend on what shows up. I know its a bit early for ducklings yet. If people have their birds under lights, there may be some early hatchlings. I live in southwestern MN and our calls started laying last week and the geese just a couple days ago. I put my first batch of eggs in the incubator but lil early to check fertility yet.

Hattiegun...if you do drive up, maybe make a weekend of it. There is the MN Pheasant & Waterfowl swap on the 20th in New Prague (about 1 hour from New Ulm) and then the big New Ulm swap on the 21st. There is also an exotic auction in Jackson on the 20th too. I know some of the people I talked to from IA are coming saturday morning, staying overnight, and then heading back sunday afternoon.

I have heard good things about the New Ulm swaps, but that's a two hours drive for me. I had a barn fire in February and lost all my chickens. I'm really looking for any feather footed or crested breeds. Would the March 21st swap in New Ulm be worth the drive?
