2013 Chicks Picked Out!

I was planning on ordering chicks, but the hubby says I can't until after the coop is built next month. So I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to wait on some of the heritage breeds I wanted to get for a varied flock, since I don't think they will be available/will be sold out by the time the coop is done.

What's more likely is that I'll go down to the local TSC or Feed store and come home with a small box of random peeping chicks in the Spring.
I kinda liked getting my chicks locally. The 4 chicks I got from the feed stores last year are great. I get 3-4 eggs daily and they have a ton of personality .They are just common breeds(white rock, barred rock, black star, and rir) but I got variety by going to 4 different stores.

We will be ordering spitzhaubens, barbanter, and golden phoenix. Out of our existing flock the spitz and phoenix have been the two breeds that stand out. The phoenix are so friendly, and the spitz have so much character plus they are good free range birds and lay well hopefully the barbanter has the same characteristics.

Where are you getting your Brabanters? I would love to hatch some in the future.

Oh and heaven help me! I just added three EE's to my chick order so now we are getting

15 Rainbow assortment...like opening a Christmas present
Mystery Chick
2 Dorkings
5 Swedish Flower Hens
3 Easter Eggers

I've changed my list :) Found a place locally that will be selling chicks the week of 3/17 (they are also holding a "intro to backyard chickens" class on 2/2- excited about that!) I'd rather get them here than have them shipped. They will have Buff Orps, Black Stars, Red Stars, and EE's. I'm thinking 2 buff orps and 2 EEs, and 1 each of the stars. Think that will be a good mix?
I do think that is a good mix. The Stars will give you an egg a day most everyday once they start to lay and the EEs maybe 8 or so a week. Buff Orps are good layers too with there numbers running somewhere between the EEs and the Stars. Have fun with your class!

Craigslist! Put up an ad for what you want and you might find some near you. There have been all kinds of beautiful breeds listed and I got several responses for rare breeds locally. : )

After more prowling, and reshuffling I have changed my projected chick orders.

Hoping to order and receive mid February

2 Ancona females
2 Blue Andalusions females
2 Blue Cochin females
2 Partridge Cochin females
1 White Cochin male
15 Assorted Brown Egg layers females

And on the order from Cackle I am getting the surprise box
