I kinda liked getting my chicks locally. The 4 chicks I got from the feed stores last year are great. I get 3-4 eggs daily and they have a ton of personality .They are just common breeds(white rock, barred rock, black star, and rir) but I got variety by going to 4 different stores.I was planning on ordering chicks, but the hubby says I can't until after the coop is built next month. So I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to wait on some of the heritage breeds I wanted to get for a varied flock, since I don't think they will be available/will be sold out by the time the coop is done.
What's more likely is that I'll go down to the local TSC or Feed store and come home with a small box of random peeping chicks in the Spring.
Found a place locally that will be selling chicks the week of 3/17 (they are also holding a "intro to backyard chickens" class on 2/2- excited about that!) I'd rather get them here than have them shipped. They will have Buff Orps, Black Stars, Red Stars, and EE's. I'm thinking 2 buff orps and 2 EEs, and 1 each of the stars. Think that will be a good mix?
