2014 Hatchery Chick Orders

This batch is actually larger than my cackle batch from February. The turkey poults are HUGE. I forgot how big the little guys are.

I have two poults, six EE, and 11 Spitzhaubens brooding together at the moment. The poults are so tall it is funny. The EE's are so fluffy and wide. The Sptizhaubens are slimmer and quicker. Next week I will have to separate some of these guys out due to space issues and I think I will keep the poults with the EE chicks.

My cochin bantams are pretty large too.

So far I have lost one. It had "mushy chick." I don't know if I should email Cackle and tell them? I don't need a credit since they sent three extras, but maybe they keep data about these kinds of things? I have another that is exhibiting symptoms of mushy chick, maybe.

I have lost 2 so far. The first silkie and one of my gold sex link pullets who flipped over last night and I guess she couldn't get back up and got too cold and died about 5 minutes after I found her like that

. Then that white rock pullet that was doing poorly yesterday isn't going to make it either. At least that weak turkey is doing fine now.

Just an FYI. Our local co-op ordered buff ducks from Ideal Hatchery. I picked up 5 of them to keep my lone buff duck company. The 5 buff ducks I brought home turned out to be 4 pekins and one fawn runner/pekin cross, I don't even know how they managed that last one with the weight difference. Sloppy husbandry or just a lack of caring on their part. I really don't want any of what I got. I wanted buff. So now I've got feed costs for 5 ducks that I don't want and really am not looking forward to the hassle of disposal.

My order from MPC came yesterday - They called me Monday to let me know that the Silver Laced Wyandottes didn't hatch so I needed a substitution. I was able to get 2 more Blue Orpingtons, cost me more but I am happy

. They shipped Monday around 2:45 and I picked them up from my post office Tuesday noon.

So I have 2 Buff Orpingtons 3 Blue Orpingtons 2 Red Stars and 6 assorted bantam (types still unknown). All pullets (hopefully, although I wouldn't mind a bantam roo) All but 1 seem to be healthy. I will post pictures later today, they are so cute.

One of the bantam seems a little off, not as active as the others I really haven't seen her eat yet. I keep dipping her beak in the water with save a chick every couple of hours, so she is drinking. She will stand there looking sleepy and then make her way back under the heating plate. I was afraid to check this morning but she is still alive and acting the same. Is there anything else I should be doing?

So these should be my Blue Orpingtons - the yellow one has grey around her face , is it typical to be that light? she is definitely different colouring than the Buffs how can I be sure she is a blue?
