2015 August hatch-a-long!!

thanks, it is hard because you seem to get more attached to the ones you have to really spend time with.  You want to give them every possible chance.  4 eggs left in the bator.  one white, think that one is dead in there now.  (seems the last two little white eggs had issues)  Then i have the 3 brown ones that are on day 21 today but I think they are going to be late bloomers.  I can't see movement but with those brown eggs it is difficult to candle them.  sure hope they pop out ok like the first 6 did.  My husband was more upset about the little one that died than he wanted to let on.  I am hoping these do well and he will get excited again to see the process.
take care

Yes you're right. I know I got a lot more attached to the needy ones. And then when they die,I kind of felt like I failed. My husband as well as so many people here have reassured me,that is not true. In fact, that lil guy felt so much love. He knew you were trying to help him. I believe he was content as he could've been. There're some people that would've done nothing. Sad,also true. You did so well. I agree...wait a couple more days on the ones due today. Yes tell me about it! The browns are much more difficult. I know. My husband is reserved too. But you know him like I know mine.

Update: my two bantam chicks,Sable and Andy, are great! My last 5 eggs didn't hatch. I had one that wasn't fertile and 4 "quitters".

I have another 4 from Wilson that were a bit behind so we'll see what happens. I'm happy with my two bantam chicks! They're the only other bantams I have other than ma and pa.

Full of questions here sorry - I took the four keets away from their mom and they have been screaming their heads off in the brooder. They are eating, drinking and slept. They are in my house. but will they quiet down eventually? I've raised many keets but never took them directly from a hen.

With all that screaming, I would let them be with their mum, unless they are in danger. If you keep them inside they probably will eventually calm down but I have never had keets before.

The yellow dot on the back of the head means the chick has the barring gene. Barred hens can only pass their barring gene to their male chicks. If all the chicks had the head spot, then the Barred Rock was the only mother, and all the chicks were male.
so does male barred only give there daughters the barred gene

Male barred birds can pass their barring gene to both their male and female offspring. This is why purebred males look 'lighter' than the females. They have 2 copies of the barring gene, one from their mother and one from their father. Purebred females only have one barred gene, and it can only come from the father.
