2018 Newbie Chat!

Awwww so sorry for your losses :hugs It's never easy when we lose those we love, nor when we lose our beloved pets but to lose so many at the same time must make grieving and coming to terms with our losses so much harder, I really feel for you :hugs
My mother had both knees replaced, and has given her a new lease of life, she went from almost crippled, to normal, totally support you having that op, it's well worth it.
Would be lovely if you post puppy pics when you get your new dog :thumbsup

Coyotes are out in full swing. All surrounding areas have released warnings about leaving dogs and kids out unsupervised. A family a few miles from lost a 20 pound dog to 2 coyotes. So it's not just small 10 pound dogs. We are doing a buddy system here. My senior pup is never out there without the german shepherd. Generally there are 3 dogs out at a time. The coyotes seem to be moving in groups instead of solo.

So I'm assuming that anyone dealing with colder weather and snow should be careful. The coyotes are pretty bold right now. Free range chickens or chickens not in a secure pen are not safe, especially now.

I still have the rabbits in the run and I have kept the electric fence on to protect them until I can remove them safely. I don't want them to end up dinner and I'm pretty sure they picked this spot because they didn't want to be dinner either..lol They seem to be pretty content. I keep the heated waterer going for them and I feed them rabbit food and hay. They may never leave, but they are safe..
I really feel for you guys having the predators you have there - they make our predators seem like puppy dogs in comparison! It seems you guys never get a break from them either, just as one species backs off, others replace them, must be such a strain to never have a break from the worrying. Over here our worst predators are foxes, but they seem nothing compared to what you guys have to deal with, really feel for you but can't help being thankful that we don't have such predators.
I'm so touched by your beautiful heart and the care you have for animals, taking care of the rabbits too. I'm sure they know they are safe with you.

Any pup you save will be lucky these days. I had a puppy almost all the time from like 2009 until 2014. Once they all grew up and now they are getting older I feel like I have not had a puppy in forever. What I do have are a bunch of well behaved dogs now. All that work when they were puppies, but the memories out weigh the work by far. I'm not sure I can ever be without a dog in my life. They bring such joy and happiness.

I did think about starting to foster after I don't have my own. That way I can make the biggest impact and save a few. I just can't be a foster failure..that has already happened..lol

Thanks. :) I will most definitely post pictures when I get a puppy!
It's always good to hear of somebody who had the same surgery as one is anticipating. My biggest fear is inadequate pain relief due to the opiate addiction epidemic here in the states. Doctors and pharmacies both are severely limiting the amount you can have. I also have rheumatoid arthritis and would have to go off my meds for that before and after surgery. The meds compromise the immune system and that has to be in full swing for surgery. And not having meds for that is scary and painful too.
but anyway, this is a chicken forum, lol, so on to chickens!

Jade and Pearl have sort of the same patterns on their feather so I'm kind of thinking they might be related. Either same Mom or Dad. Funny thing is I came across a thread from 2013 where someone had a picture of the EE Bantams they got from MyPet Chicken and they looked just like Jade, Pearl and Opal, lol! Seems they've been getting their EE hatching eggs from the same line for a while.

My sister has adopted quite a few old dogs They're always the last to get adopted. From the looks of Petfinder, a lot of people dump their dogs as they get old and need care. It's so sad. She finally got a puppy because it was hard on her with them dying within very few years of getting them. My daughter fostered a older dog from the south after one of the hurricanes. She posted almost daily updates on her on the rescue's Facebook and she got adopted really quick.

Lovely pictures of your beautiful girls :love
I agree Jade and Pearl look remarkably alike, in their faces as well as their markings, make me also wonder if they are related.
As for the knee op, I have to admit it is very painful, like you my mum is limited to what pain killers she can take and had to rely on weak painkillers which are used for everyday headaches and was close to tears sometimes due to it being so painful, but she'd do it all again if she had to (and did really as she had one done then the other some months later). She along with others I know who have had knee and those having had hip replacements, all say the results are such it is well worth going through. A bit of advice though, if you do have it done, you really have to make sure you do all the exercises they give you, no matter how painful it might be, b'cos if you don't the false knee joint will seize up and once it locks it can't be fixed - one lady we know didn't do her exercises and hers are permanently locked now so she can't bend her knees at all (however, she still says its better than how she was before the op).
I'm sure you'll make the right decision for you, what ever you decide :)
