2018 Newbie Chat!

Well it got down to the 30s last night and the chicks all survived with no problems. I was just a little concerned, not much though. I brought them some nectarine slices this morning, they sure love those! I was trying to figure out pecking order by who moved for who. Either Jade is the lowest or she's just shy of me being around. She's the one who runs from me the most. But all of them except Diamond run now. Teenagers! I can touch Opal, Pearl and Amber if I move slowly and they come up to me. Amber got a bit scared of me from all the stuff I had to put on her crest feathers. I think she's doing ok now though. She has stubble in places and I'm pretty sure they were actually breaking off the feathers instead of pulling them out. I trimmed the feathers around her eyes so she can see now so maybe she retaliates when they go at her now. She can see who's attacking her. I think she's gone up in the current pecking order too, that ought to help. She's the biggest one, she should throw her weight around a bit, tell them no way you're ruining my beautiful feathers, lol!

It might even be that they were curious and now the novelty has worn off they're not interested anymore - just a thought - Chickens are often attracted to anything unusual like with our girls for example - My daughter has a mole on her knee and our girls used to peck at it loads, after a while they lost interest and now they leave it alone.

It's rainy and cool here today. It's been a a really wet fall for us - we usually don't get much rain at all during the fall. I'm enjoying the cool weather! But cool for us is 60s-70s. Chicks are doing well in their coop. I'm working on getting their yard ready for them, but have to wait out the rain right now.
We are the complete opposite - October is usually quite cool with temps around 9°C - 15°C (48.2°F - 59°F) but this year its running at 18°C - 21°C (64.4°F - 69.8°F) and I just read forecast for tomorrow is 22°C (71.6°F) - we just not used to this warm weather this time of year. - I just got to hope that when it changes it does so slowly otherwise the girls won't have time to acclimatize.

Do your roses have scents? If they do I bet they smell lovely - sorry, I hit your comment by mistake - I meant to attach this to @ChooksNQuilts
Interestingly the beautiful dark red ones have no scent at all. Neither do my white ones.
But the ones that are pink/yellow or peach/pink smell divine!
I was fascinated by the rain droplets shimmering on them that day.

Charlotte is going through her teenage drama lol.
She’s not always feeling like letting me pick her up lately.
But I did today and she was fine so I lowered my head to see if she wanted to preen my hair.
Instead she grabbed my pearl earring and twisted it back and forth!
I had to grab her head and beak to get her to let go.
I won’t be doing that anymore

We went ahead and named the cockerel we hatched. I fell in love with a post earlier this year of a chicken named Pig, so Pig it is.

I moved him back in with the girls last night. Went great until this morning. I believe he’s trying to mate the blue Ameraucana but doesn’t know how. He’s repeatedly pecking her head trying to pin her down. She gets fed up of being pecked and attacks him. It never ends. From here on out he’ll get to sleep with the girls and I’ll seperate him during the day.

Wow! That is very young for such behavior.
I read somewhere that when butchering cockerels and roosters it was discovered that some individuals had testicles twice the size of others.
I think that’s why some have over the top aggression and libido lol.
Hopefully young Pig will grow out of it or you may have a lot of trouble and hassle on the horizon.
