2018 Newbie Chat!

Hey everyone, I'm new here. Should we get chicks now or wait until spring and get pullets?
Temp are about to cool down dramatically, making integration outside much more time consuming. I’ve gotten chicks in the winter before and they spent nearly four months inside. Plus you risk loss during shipping in the colder months. It’s more work this time of year. That’s for sure.

Oh shoot, I read that as soon as they are feathered out they are ready for the coop? My thought to getting chicks was they would start laying in springtime and be handled by my kids. Then again my thoughts for getting pullets was the easy factor. I may try craigslist for laying hens instead of chicks right now.

In the springtime that is true. Where freezing temps are long since passed. In the spring your house/garage is closer to outside temps making the change less drastic. In winter there is no way to acclimate them to the extreme cold.

Isn't it just adorable? Sunny wagged her butt when I said her name. The butt wagging was the best. I'll have to work with the other two. I think Ricky knows his name. Lucy is more skiddish, although they have been more clingy the last couple days with Sunny. I plan on spending some time with them today.
Awwww bless you :hugs These are wonderful experiences and wonderful memories too - have you decided to go ahead with incubating the eggs?

P.S. I've heard that butt waggling is a sign of happiness and excitement, clearly she was displaying her pleasure at seeing you :)

I'm not even kidding. It's snowing here and the temps have dropped dramatically. This is crazy.

I was out there working and the wind picked up like a mini tornado and the snow came out of nowhere. The chickens were running everywhere, I'm yelling at them to get in the coop. I was afraid of the trees--some branches came down.

Right now I have them in the coop and the ducks in their house for safety.

It feels like it's the middle of the winter. Absolutely crazy.

Wow, that is a dramatic change!
