2018 Newbie Chat!

I think my smaller Orpington chick has coccidiosis :(
She’s not moving around as much as the others and she has some diarrhea on her butt.
She stays under the heat plate.
When I get home tonight I’m going to treat everyone with some Corid. :fl
Beware, Orpingtons (though they are a heritage breed) will have more issues. They are known to be some of the weakest chicks, susceptible to many illnesses that other breeds seem to have no problem with. When we get in chicks at my work we always have the most losses and issues with orpingtons. The one I had last year acted identical to yours. She didn’t have cocci, just a weaker chick who was affected by shipping much more than the others. Nutridrench a couple times a day for three days did the trick for me. Prayers headed your way for your little Orpington.

So glad the move and settling in went so well! It must have been a relief knowing they're in such good hands. Although sad too. :hugs
I hope and pray you can keep the chickens.

It is so sad that people can keep animals in horrible conditions. But wonderful that there are people who rescue them and give them happiness and love.
This couple do a tremendous job, they've nursed near to death birds and rehomed them into good, safe and loving homes.
They get a lot of opposition too, they've had noise complaints from a housing estate who claim they can hear the cockerels and ducks even though they are quite a far distance away, they've had claims of vermin too but to walk to the housing estate would take at least an hour, I'm not sure of the distance between the Chuckery and the housing estate but it's a fair way away - don't know what it is with people and vermin claims, they hear "chickens" then think ooo vermin! Stupid people. Their complaints won't get them anywhere though as the RSPCA is involved and know the place is kept and run as it should be, otherwise they wouldn't use it but they do.
I guess there's always going to be busy bodies causing trouble where ever we go - such a shame but I guess that's life.

Ugh I wish I’d known that before buying them.
Ironically the larger one was the one that had fallen out of the hutch to the concrete floor. But it’s fine and extremely vigorous...watch it turn out to be a cockerel even though they’re supposed to be sexed pullets :barnie
I gave them all Nutri Drench for two days...hmmm, I’ll try Corid and maybe some more Nutri Drench

I wish I had known before getting mine too. I’m going to sell her this year as I’m really not impressed with the breed. For being the “friendliest” breed out there, mine is just an awful bird. I had a lavender Orp that I culled in the summer. I’ll never get another barred rock or Orpington ever again. Australorps and Welsummer are my favorite breeds now. Hardy, great egg layers. Non confrontational, lowest in the pecking order, and great confined or free ranged. I hope yours pulls through.

Oh yes, my neighbor's concern about me getting chickens was that they attract rats. To which I said, "And the peanuts you put on the ground for the squirrels don't?"
He kinda hemmed and hawed and I never heard another word about it, lol.
It just popped out of my mouth before I could mentally screen it and make it more pleasant, but my husband and I have been quite annoyed by those peanuts for years but have never said anything. We have had rats. And the squirrels are becoming so tame they walk right up to us when we're sitting outside. I don't particularly like a wild animal just walking up to me when a quick movement on my part may get me a bite.
