2019 Spring Ducklings are here!

Here is the second live birth of my franchise of the Waddel Inn. His sister died from head injuriesfrom before I knew they existed, The wife and I both heard strange sounds coming the intercom a few minutes before 6 AM. I just passed it off that Rosebud was running late in announcing her usual 430 AM success in laying today's egg. Three hours later when I opened the duck house door I had two strangers just inside the door. One boy and one girl duckling. She was already dead and he was wet and shivering in the cool morning temperature in the high 40's. I rushed him into the house, started a brooder and dunked his head in water before going back to finish my morning chores. A lot of soldiers died on the beaches of France 76 years ago today, so in their honor he will be named D-day and spoiled rotten since he has no siblings that we are aware of.

@Magnolia So very cute. You had a stealth sitting duck? How do you know he's a he?

On my farm, to begin with, all my off springs are sex linked to their parents. From a brown drake and a black hen I will get brown hens and black drakes. This genetic trait goes away when Elvis mates his brown daughters in the future.

That is so convenient! - I still have no clue what my four fluffbutts are - genderwise, they are cute, loud and so self-sufficient! We just got the first taste of Cristobal up here in WV. (!!!)
A thunderstorm with tropical downpour after a day full of humidity and panting (the ducks!) - i had iced-tea…

Example of Duck Math: I bought 4 hens in May of last year to start this project off. In October I bought the correct kind of drake to sex link my hens. Over the winter I buy an incubator. In April I try my first run with the shiny new incubator. 7 go in and 4 hatch. They have graduated from the brooder in my office to the brooder in the garage. Yesterday I open the duck house at the appointed time and I have two natural born. One was killed during lockdown and the other was not much better wet and cold. I bury the hen and cuss the drake. After supper last night the wife getnow has a gut feeling that she had better check the coop camera. Sure enough their is one more fluff-butt in the coop. The dishes can wait. I rescue him and he like his brother like being inside her sleepwear right next to her heart. I now have both brooders in operation. My original investment of 4 hens has grown into a flock of 10 and 1 death all the while I am trying to locate a farm out of state to move too. This is no problem when you compare it to what WannaBeHillBilly is going through with Hurricane Christobal. I wish them all the best.
