As a first year chicken owner I am getting nervous about winter. I just ran power to my coop and hope to get a heater for my 5 gallon bucket with horizontal nipple set up to prevent their water from freezing here in New England.

I know this one might have varying opinions, but I got these turkey feather dusters for my brooder and the chick LOVE them. Zip tied them in a cluster to the side and they prefer to pile up with each other in and under these than the heat plate. I have not had a problem with Turkey feathers, but could see why the stringy ostrich feather dusters could pose a danger.

All the birds here that are bug eaters love them. The chickens, the ducks, the quail, the guineas, the turkeys - they all go nuts for them.

Bonus, and I know this from feeding the live ones to my beardie, they have a really great calcium to phosphorus ratio, so they're good treats for layers.

I've had chickens here in New England and yeah water heater plates are the way to go
