2021 Chick Order

Pics
Which hatchery did they come from?

My first thought was something mottled, going by the black parts and the pale parts, but the gray isn't quite right. So now I'm inclined to go poke through the hatchery's list of breeds. I'm guessing something with black and silver, no gold, and I think no Dominant White or Blue or Splash.
IDEAL

We're thinking the mottled javas. They're an odd size though

What kind of comb?

Because I'm thinking the color might be right for Columbian Wyandotte (standard or bantam).
I can't really tell. I'll try to post it in a bit, I'm just not great when they're so itty.

I have some chipmunk standards too, so I think both of these actually got put in instead of my Cornish bantams. Kinda stinks since I was excited for them. But I'll try to add them to my order for april and try again

We looked at the Columbians too, but the pattern seemed to overlap onto their neck and sides more. These literally look like they have little superhero capes on

I agree, it can be very had to tell.

To my eyes, baby rose combs are usually wider than other combs, although I have certainly been fooled before.

Definitely interesting.

I will definitely be curious to learn what they are when they have grown enough for you to know!

That is frustrating. I hope you are able to get them next time!

I wish they indicated somewhere that there were substitutions made on the invoice

Don't hatcheries sometimes have single combed wyandottes?

Did you look at the box?

The most recent time I got an order from Ideal, there were stickers on several sides of the box, listing the chicks that were inside. Not every breed on every sticker, but each breed was listed at least once on one or another sticker.

I'm guessing the stickers were to help them keep it straight as they packed the chicks, but I wonder if substitutes would show up somewhere on that.

Yes they sometimes do, although I would still expect most Wyandottes to have rose combs.
I was mostly thinking that a single comb doesn't tell us much, but any other kind of comb really narrows down the list of possible breeds.

The two mystery breeds both have a very similar comb to this one (the cape ones was too blurry). No tines to indicate single comb but that was it that I could tell.

I agree that it's probably not a single comb, but I cannot tell if it's rose or pea.
So I think you can rule out quite a few breeds that would have single combs, but that still leaves quite a few not-quite-right breeds.

I think I'll just have to fall back on the common advice to "post more pictures in a few weeks" :)
