21 Week Old Buff Brahma Possibly Ill - Any Help Greatly Appreciated

Thank you! I was worried I was feeding them too little protein because none of them have laid any eggs and they all are of age now. In fact, the ISAs are both past due...I bought them some 20% feed and oyster shells in a separate dish so hopefully the additional protein and calcium will help with egg production, cus, uh, there isn’t any. :-|

Not sure how to help her but you are feeding your layers a meat bird food. The could use a little more protein and soon will need layer ration. Mash is made by just adding water to their food and letting it soak and soften up. It wouldn’t hurt to try some Nutrdrench on her

I'm pretty sure we have a broody hen on our hands :jumpy That's your excuse to raise more babies :D

That’s what I was wondering too, I mean, she screeched like I was murdering her when I put her in the run from the nesting box and she sprinted back to the coop. We do have a rooster, although he’s on his way out because we aren’t allowed to have them in the city. Does that have anything to do with it??

It would be hard to know exactly what is going on with her without getting some droppings checked for coccidiosis and worms by your vet. She might be suffering from something related to her reproductive system, or have something else going on. A vet that is familiar with chickens would be good to see. Or you could go ahead and give her some Corid and treat for coccidiosis. What is your location and climate like? Has it been warm and wet recently? I would separate her with food and Corid water. Offer some feed mixed with water in a small bowl, some scrambled egg, tuna, or canned cat food. A poultry vitamin with electrolytes would also be good. If you start Corid, stop the vitamins while on Corid. Corid dosage is 1.5 tsp of the powder, or 2 tsp of the liquid per gallon of water as her only water. It is safe enough for other chickens. It would be unusual to become broody before laying any eggs, but you could rule that out.

It has been warm and humid. VA is always so humid. They are on medicated feed so hopefully it’s not coccidiosis. I really did not have a useful visit when I took my Orpington to the vet it was $100 for her to basically move the girls leg around, and I’ll be suuuper miffed if I go on Monday and the same thing happens. She has an appointment scheduled with a vet that specializes in birds and has seen many chickens so I’m hoping that they’ll shed some light on what it is. I figure that like kids, your first chickens are the ones you’re the most paranoid about.

The vet may have to send it to lab anyway to test for that.. if that's the case see if your state has a lab because they will do it for a huge fraction of the cost. Poultry is food so they consider it a health program of sort

I want to give you some advice. Do not take them to the vet unless you have to.... My vet charges me 340 for testing. The state lab in Florida charges me 10 dollars. :l

My vet is very reasonable and has saved two of my birds' lives. He even saved a cockatiel of mine on Christmas Day. If she were my birds, and I had determined that she just wasn't broody, I would definitely take her to the vet.

I took two to the vet recently. turns out I knew what I was doing the doctor looked at her and said she was healing fine :l From her staph infection

The weather here is cooling off, 77-87 degrees at peak heat. She gets DuMor

my goodness! You are right! I contacted them and they do all kinds and even if I tested her for every single one they look at it would run me $100 at most. Thank you so much!!!!!

Study as much as you can you can find a lot of wisdom from people on byc. You will gain confidence to start treating things yourself. I don't like the vet they've never been they helpful and when they saved raven I had to BEG them to give her medicine even if it didn't work. They wanted me to put her down or wait two weeks for the over priced lab report to come back so I can schedule another appointment!!!!!

That def sounds like a broody hen! :) Now you have to decide - give her fertile eggs to hatch, or start researching 'how to break a broody hen'! :caf
