And in many states, intentionally injuring a dog is animal abuse. Killing one who's attacking livestock is permitted. Look up regulations where you live! Dog owners are responsible for any damage caused by their animal too. In many places, 'strays' are owned dogs allowed to run free, who form packs, a dangerous situation. Eliminating them may be the best anyway.
And good fencing is important to protect the chickens! Especially electric fencing, if allowed where you live.
