3-4 w. old chick not eating/drinking

Yes, I am a mostly kid - teen-adult and yes family do not care about chickens as much .-.

I’ve got it to eat and drink by adding oatmeal to the liquids.

Its more energetic, but there’s still some blood in the poop when I don’t feed it milk

Oh yes - according to some guides, I was told to give the chicken some egg yolk.

It seems to love it. And also I read that if the chicken gets through a week it should be fine.

Is this advice right?

PS. Neighbours nor ag school has the medicines, closest place selling it is 20 miles away so I’ll have to wait till the weekend if I even get allowed to buy the medicine .-..

Oh Albert, I am so glad you are taking care of the chooks for your family. If you can keep the chook on buttermilk until you can get the meds, it might help it through. Just want you to be prepared, that with this parasite, especially young chooks, can go down hill very fast.

You are doing a GREAT job keeping that little chook alive and I am so proud of you! I truly hope and am praying your family will help you get the meds. I DO understand their reasons, and I don't think it's because they don't care...just sometimes it's tough and parents have to make hard decisions.

You keep up the good work, who knows, maybe you will decide to become a vet someday? You have the heart for it

Best of luck with your chook

Yes I know, I practically lost my last chick to cocci, though it officially drowned.

This chick is much more braver than the last one - the last was still quiet when healthy and yeah my family just thinks its not worth it since its not definite it will be saved. I’m looking at the medicine online and I’ll try my best to get them

Thanks for the support :)

Albert, I really don't know if what you were told is true or not. Sorry! I think, and am not really sure, so this is just a guess...they might be talking about immunities...like if the chick's own immunities/the chicks body itself, can get the parasite load under control ( cause the parasite to be less of them, in the chooks' system ), with the help of food, the buttermilk, and water, it should survive...but I am just guessing on what they meant.

Also, you can make buttermilk by adding a tad of vinegar to regular milk but I don't know the exact amount of vinegar to milk is. Can you Google it?

The other OP that gave you the name and place of the meds that cost $6.00 sounds like she knows what you need for where you live. I would try my best to get the money and buy that medication she recommended. Remember to ask how much to give the chooks too while you are there and if you can just put it in their water, or if you have to give it to them by mouth. If they won't drink the water, you can mix it up, and dump a little into some of their feed and they will LOVE it like that and gulp it down, if they are not too sick by then, ( even if they aren't eating, or try mixing it with the eggs )

Next time you go to get feed, check and see if it is the medicated, as the medicated is to help the chooks immune systems build a resistance to this parasite. It blocks thiamine, but not as much as the meds do, just enough to help the chooks not get sick as easily. ( you still will need to give the meds to them now that they are already sick ) Plus, if you can clean out where you are keeping them, maybe put down some clean straw/hay or sawdust/shavings, that will help a lot also. It will get into their living area, like a dirt floor, or whatever they live in and they can get too many for their little bodies to handle and that's why they get sick.

It's best, if you can, to feed the medicated for a month or two, from when they are first hatched. That should help you at least not lose as many young chooks. The young chooks get sick much more easy as they haven't developed any immunities yet. The medicated feed shouldn't cost any more than regular, so your family shouldn't have to worry about that part.

I hope I helped you understand a bit more?
Best of luck and hope things go ok for you and your chooks!!!!

You are so welcome. Here is an idea...if you can get the meds, as quickly as possible, you really CAN save the chook. It's will only die, if it takes too long to get the meds into them. ( If you do get the meds, treat all your chooks too, since you have one already died and one pretty sick, the others will most likely get sick also. ) It's a parasite, not a disease, and that is a huge difference. Kill the "bug" chooks get better.

Maybe if you explained that to your family, they might be more willing to help you get the meds? It's true, I had the same thing with my chooks, when they were young. Got the meds we have here in the US, and saved all of them by getting it into them quickly. I am pretty sure, the meds that lady suggested, are probably the same thing, just a different name and if so, yes the chook can be saved!

If you explain it nicely to them, calmly and with the knowledge you have gotten here, you might just change their minds

Windsor is approx 40km (25 miles) away from where I am, so even if I am to get there, it’ll have to be on the weekend, because I have school and there is no ample time for me to drive there .-.

I can’t do much about the big chick that is sick now, since it looks OK-ish, but I’m wondering what other way there is to prevent cocci other than medicated chick feed. I’ll ask the feed store whether the feed is medicated.

The sulfadim is available at most pet shops. Pretty much anywhere you can buy a budgie. Do you have the bag that the feed come in? What suburb do you live in ? I'm sure we can find somewhere closer for you. That is to get amprolium.
