I noticed today for the first time that my 3 week old Black Copper Marans probable cockerell has some kind of problem with his right eye. There appears to be a fleshy element in the bottom right corner, possibly a damaged nictitating membrane. I asked my chick’s breeder if she had any idea what the problem might be and she said she did not know and had not seen anything like this before but suspected he somehow injured the membrane, as, e.g., by another chicken pecking at it.

Have any of you had any experience with injuries (or diseases / afflictions) that look like this? How did you treat it? What was the outcome? For the record, I do not think it is chicken flu as his left eye is fine, there is no odor, and he does not appear to be weak. Thanks to everyone who responds with input.

Probably an injury as you suspect. Chicks peck each other's eyes all the time.

Wash the eye well with saline. (You can make your own - recipe on the internet.) Then put an antibiotic ointment in the eye, such as Neosporin. Do this twice a day until it's healed.
