This Polish hatched from my Bator 3 weeks ago. She was born smaller and gooeyer than the rest. She is growing, but slowly and is about 1/2 the size of the others. She eats well drinks well and even play fights with the others. No one seems to pick on her but she breathes like this. Always has.

Should I be concerned? My DH loves her so much he named her sweet pea!

Let me know what you think?

Edit: I just corresponded with the breeder and she said there is a possibility that the old English game rooster got in with the Polish! Omg! Maybe that's why she's so tiny!also why their top hats haven't begun growing yet. On a positive note, the other two are frizzle. Loo

I don't see any drainage from her eyes or nose and would guess there aren't concerning respiratory issues at this time. Neither polish or old english game bantams have black skin or feathered legs. Your chick looks like a lovely silkie mix. :)

Agreed, there's Silkie in there somewhere, which are much smaller than Polish, and would explain her size. I think she's fine :-D

Thanks all. I don't think the breeder has silkies. But she does have cochin.

I'm a little aggravated because I wanted those cute top hats, and I didn't want bantams, let alone mixed breeds. (yet) But all 3 of these chicks are super friendly and curious and at this point are my favorite by far.

Watching the video, it looks a bit like at the end of the breath, the chick is pushing the butt under. I'd make sure that there isn't any pasty butt or semi blockage back there. Pretty chick though!

Chicks breathe faster and harder than older chickens. What I see is normal breathing. All the other signs you mention indicate a healthy chick. I wouldn't worry.

Thanks all. None of these chicks have had pasty butt. That compared to the chickens I got at feldmans last time, I'm going to incubate or broody from here on out. No more traumatized chicks!

(and yes, she still seems to be doing well and holding her own
