I wish I could afford a 3D printer, but the stuff I print is pretty tiny, so I'll probably have to wait for the quality machines to get cheaper. I can model in sketchup and export as a .dae to upload to shapeways and then order prints off that. The nice thing is that I can offer prints of my models for sale through them and set the commission price to make a little money.

A 3d printer would be awesome! I usually draw everything on paper first and once I have a solid idea, i jump to sketchup. It really comes in handy for woodworking and there are plenty of tutorials online to learn the shortcuts.

I have gone online, combination between the local big-box store and McMaster-Carr, and looked up prices for the materials needed to put this coop together.

Total price before tax is $352.65

Doesn't seem too bad to me. What do others think?

Next up, recommended tools.

I know I'd want a pneumatic nailer, pneumatic stapler, an impact-driver.a miter-saw, and a circular saw. That's a bit more than the cost of the materials if you bought the cheapest available (which would be a horrible idea).

Is this a list for a woods mini coop? The list is great it would be nice in the notes if it refered to what the 2x4 or 2x2 is for.
I have a good size hen house. but I'm looking for a coop that would house 2 roosters. Now when I bring hens in this coop I want the roosters separated. So option one is move rooster to a dog kennel. still needs shelter. Of What I was thinking was build a woods. with a chicken wire wall down the middle. Each side would hold 1 rooster and say 2 hens tops at any time. so needs to support 6 birds for a while then the other half the time its the 2 boys.

The reason I'm leaning towards w a woods was my cousin from Indiana just modeled her coop after her grandmothers. when I saw a pic I'm like Dang That's a woods style. so I thought a mini might be cool.
I Plan to cut all dimensional lumber from eastern red cedar. I have half log spruce siding or lots of spruce t&g to do floors walls. or whatever. Even with a wood t&g floor Id lay it on plywood with a vapor barrier. I was think walls on osb and vapor barrier. roof t&g then vapor and Ply the probable metal.

So All Id need are a box of timberlocks and latches window, wire ,concrete and I'm sure I missing something. But I wouldn't need a whole lot.

Yep, that's a list for a woods coop. See the images earlier in this thread. The design for this one is untested as of yet. Also, I won't swear by my list. Been a bit since I gathered that info together. This coop wouldn't be large enough to split down the middle. This list was I believe for a 6' by 4' coop.

The draft SketchUp model is where it's clear what parts are for what. The list you quoted was to get a sense of the cost.

I really have everything but Hardwire cloth and windows. If it @ 4' wide I'm thinking lowes has some 18" x 12' windows that maybe could be mounted on there side to make the 2 monitor windows. They would then side left of right to open. I would mount the so I could slide them from the outside.(So backwards. But being viynl that should work with 2 weep holes drilled into what would be the inside(now facing outward).

I have shingles. and all kinds of t&G and siding. So just needing some plywood, osb and latches 3 windows are @ $150. I wish I knew how Howard built his monitor windows I just can find any pics in his thread. I did find writing but pics work better for me.

So from what I read in this and his mini woods thread I want to be that sucka.

The danger of using my design, is that this was an exercise for me to get better at using SketchUp.

So 1., the overall design hasn't been tested. @Howard E came up with it, but hasn't built it, and 2., the design I did in SketchUp hasn't been built by anyone yet, and the first person that does try it may well discover errors in my design!

Those caveats aside, I'm happy to share the model I created in SketchUp with you, just don't blame me if it doesn't work!!

You would need to either decipher where things go from previous posts in this thread, or install SketchUp, have me send you the model, and take a look at it.

Some of your questions I can try to answer:

All of the 1x material (1x4's, 1x12's) is used to make the door(s).

2 6' 2x2's are used on the interior floor, to fill gaps between the plywood floor and the frame, so you don't have a permanent repository for crud in that space.

In my design I used 2 2x6's for the base of the 2 long sides, and used 2 2x4's instead of a single 4x4 for each of the 4 legs. If you used 4x4's, you'd notch them to receive the 2x6's.

Everything else is made from 3/4" plywood and 2x4's (plus hardware cloth).
