Help. Yesterday, 7 of my 26 or 27 chicks got burnt. Tuesday, the heat light was moved closer to the chicks because one was shaking. The light was fine. The light was moved before bedtime. Yesterday, I thought the chicks could use a little more warmth, so the light was moved closer in the same spot as Tuesday. A little while later, I heard LOUD peeping traveling through the vents (the chicks are in the room with the wood stove- it was not on). I knew something was wrong. I went to check on them and the light had fallen on some of them. The chicks were rushed to the sink to be cooled down. Two chicks were already dead. Then, the alive chicksnwere put in a shoebox lined with a towel. Food and water was given to them. The next morning, the chicks (all except one) had all hopped out of the shoebox to cuddle with the rest of the group (the shoebox was placed in the bin with the other chicks).
Their eyes are closed now, but they walk around and eat and drink. Are they blind?

It is possible. That light is very hot and bright. I don't think there is much you can do except maybe get some Terramycin eye ointment and use it on their little eyes. Any blistering present?

It was a 100 watt light bulb (luckily not a heat bulb) and no, no blistering that I notice).

The brightness is more the concern then. Overheating is probably what killed the others. Hopefully, they will recover.

One chick has both of is eyes open now! The others' eyes feel like they're sealed because I opened one of the chick's eyes.

The chicks' eyes switch from being closed to open and vice versa. One of the chicks has a burnt foot. He usually pulls his burnt leg up like a flamingo. Is there anythig I should put on it? He eats and drinks and walks around some, but sometimes he just stands there. Another chick, a white silkie, eats and drink and walks around like the other chick, just stands there sometimes, too. Are they stunned or something? The two chicks I mentioned are also a little skinny. I keep putting food in their tub, so there will always be food. They almost always eat when the food was just poured in the cage. Any more advice for this situation???

For the one with a burnt foot, you can try some Aloe Vera or Vinegar. They both take the heat out of a burn and help it heal. It will take them a while to get over the fact the light fell on them, possibly a month. I would watch and make sure they eat. Are you putting electrolytes in their water?

The chicks seem like they are doing better. They all walk around and I see the burnt chicks eating and drinking. And no, I'm not putting electrolytes in the water. I did put in sugar the other day.

Treat the legs and other tougher skinned places with anti-burn cream on a Q-tip.
For now, keep them on electrolyte water.
Do not use ice packs or anything exceedingly cold to help them.

Good luck~!

The only burnt place is on one chick's leg. When they were first burned, they were rushed to cool water. Thanks for advice.
