4 legged chick - updated w/ pics 6/28 on page 7

I haven't read any posts but this happend to a chick of my dads once....

He cut off the extra 2 legs. Disinfected it and kept anitbacterial creme on it and the chick made it.

That is what I would do.

Good Luck

I wouldnt be so quick to go and start cutting off those extra limbs... dependent on each individual case the blood flow can vary etc etc.... How about making up an email (with photos etc. and sending to several (avian) vets incl any other veterinary colleges (an ag college might not be so interested) and ask if they would be interested to help your little birdie and explain you have but a limited income but wish to inform as a last ditch effort to help him since you have become so attached (so make sure they know this is a PET bird) > you never know what replies (and advice) you might get back and who knows ... maybe one will bite and help you for very little money.

Oh please share I have a daughter who is completely intriged with crazy stuff like that. If you don't feel comfortable with posting it here you can pm it or feel free to email it charlielynnglaze@yahoo.
Thanks oh please consider.

I still call Ripley's. Get it out there so the public knows and you will have vets and schools calling you to help just so they can find out what happened themselves. They want learning experiences. Maybe send a pic to a news station. YOu'd be surprised at the responses you will get. And I bet they'll do it for free too.

If it's doing fine with the 4 legs why cut any off? It just invites problems and infections. Unless it's in distress , just let it be.

Thanks for the updates, sounds like Quattro is doing well. I have a special needs chick with a crooked neck, it gets around fine , I tried the vitamin route for a few weeks but I think it just is a birth defect , I just have to make sure the food and water are low enough for the chick to get to . It does fine.

My concern is that in the OP she states that the extra legs drag- that seems to be an invitation for infection to me, as well as that there is significant care that the owner must perform, and thus the chick must endure, because of the poo getting on the extra legs constantly. That's going to be less of a concern as the poo becomes more cohesive, excluding cecal poos, of course- that will be fun!

I'm thinking of the chick when I suggest it may be best to amputate the unused limbs.

I'm wondering if both vents are functional, whether both oviducts will produce, as well? How very interesting a study it would be, assuming both don't try to produce simultaneously, which could be catastrophic.

Hope your baby is still doing well- can we see some updated pics?

Edited to add: I like the name- my vet has an office cat that has 3 legs named Trivet, and had one years ago named Tripod.

To the poster with the pic of the "eggtopsy" I'd love to see it to. I love weird things. You could PM or e-mail me if you don't want to post it here.

Good luck with Quattro!
