4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

That is odd. Bleeding from the vent is the only place I can think of that wouldn't be obvious, but with a large blood loss you'd expect the bird to be weak and obviously unwell. I guess just keep checking them.
That is what I thought too
If you have a roo I would check his spurs. Sometimes they can loose copious amounts of blood with little to no signs unless it is bumped.
Oh he is the only one I didn't check. I will check him out. Now, this whole thing is driving me crazy.

I got a very unpleasant wake up this morning. My brother's 13 year old cat was killed by a dog (or dogs) sometime last night. We suspect a small pack of feral chow are to blame. Goliath's 15 year old aunt, Purry, was killed earlier this year and dad's cat Cleo was lost just a few months ago. We think it was all by the same dogs. The only dog we ever see roaming is just out walking himself since his older owner no longer can, but he's a small breed that's never shown any dislike for our cats. The dog (or dogs) in question destroyed my dad's burn pit to get to the cat. Now, out of that bloodline of cats, we only have Goliath's 15 year old mom, Smudge, left. We keep losing our cats to this pack of dogs and I'm sick of it. We never see them and we're never awake when it happens.

Quote: Okay the roo is a cockerel and his spurs are not that long and no blood. I followed those chickens around and no blood in their poo confused, I would think with as much blood as I saw someone would be laying down. NO. They can't have that much blood in them do they?

It sounds to me like a coyotte, I heard they like to kill cats.

Okay everyone, I know I should ask this in the Emergency thread, but it takes forever to get answer. When I went out this morning to let everyone out of the coop and feed. I noticed a lot of blood on the ground. (don't know if it was there last night, old man locked up birds and he just isn't observant, I checked every hen out there, especially the ones right over it, no one had blood on them. I thought well maybe they killed a mouse, well while feeding I noticed blood again on the ground. NO ONE acts like they could have lost that much blood without dying. So what could it be and how can I find out who it is, if all are acting normal and upon physical inspection of all birds no blood was seen. What could it be?
Same with me. I noticed mine sneezing blood.. its on the walls and stuff too!! Everybody is sick in the coop and looking pretty much like this. One eye gooey one eye clear and healthy. been a week since its started and it just beginning to reach its peak, then it will go down again. WIth the ones that got sick two weeks ago, they are all happy and healthy like normal. So hopefully in a few days they will be fine again. Everybody also has sore throats, but thats going away. Started about 2 days ago and over half the flock has recovered from that symptom. We were gonna medicate them but I just think that will weaken them and they will go faster. Sure, we might lose a few without putting antibiotics in them, but i just cant do that to them.
Check their noses for any sign of bloodyness- maybe thats where its coming from?

we have three outside cats that because of how bad the coyotes are getting out there, we let them in out garage at night. These coyotes will come right up to our house in the middle of the day and snatch a chicken. well at the least one that did isnt gonna come back

No if I found that, I would cull. Something really wrong there. Everyone looks healthy, no nasal discharge, no vent discharge and nothing in the eyes. Plus they keep running up to me like I have peez dispenser of scratch. The blood was a trail of fresh blood and congealed pellets of blood clots (small) and none of it was on the roost.

I was going to cull, but i thought i would give the first and WORST hen an extra day to see if she would pull through. She was sneezing blood and gasping and had a croaky throat and had both eyes shut with this junk. day two the blood was gone but in place of it there was cheesey just coming out her nose and drying so she could only breath out her mouth. I peeled that off and never happened again. Day three she could opened one of her eyes half way and her nose was clear and was breathing normal. Day four she could open one of her eyes all the way and it was clear and healthy, and the other she could open halfway. day five all was normal, she looked like the healthy hen I had before. I gave her a week to make sure she was alright and put her in with the rest of the flock. but by the time she went back everybody had mild cases of it.

I would blame it on coyotes, but it was a joy kill. They normally stay out of the yard because of my SIL's Rott. Another thing is, now that I think about it, it couldn't have been the feral chow either. They've been living like that for a while now and the majority of them were born feral. My cousin ran across the pups when he lived up the road from us. My brother and dad think it was someone's pet that did it. Dad plans to stay up tonight and wait to see if it comes back.
