4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

I have some eggs that I think may be weeping, but am not sure. I always assumed weeping was wet seepage coming from the egg. I have more than one egg with what looked like wet beading on the shell, when I took them out of the bator, they pass the sniff test and the 'beading' was white and hard, more like calcification. Any input will be welcome.

Not sure if this is where I post this but the folks on the California thread wanted me to enter this pic in the holiday photo contest. Since you are already at over 3,600 posts I won't try to catch up. Let me know if I am supposed to post this somewhere else. These are my marans chicks that were hatched last Sunday night/Monday morning. This pic was taken Monday late afternoon.
Since I was taking the pic in the area where all the extra Christmas stuff has been stashed I added a few items that were scattered around. The pic can be cropped for calendar use. This would be for December of course.

Wow!! That is amazing!! That remind me on a Guinea keet that was almost dead, I rubbed it and kept it warm for about and hour (along with LOTS of prayers) and he revived...I think God had more to do with it than me. : )

I felt the same way about my white koi last night. She was on death's doorstep and I was sure she wouldn't make it through the night but I prayed and prayed and she's looking much better this morning!

By the way, I can't wait to see those duck pictures!

As far as my eggs, I candled and I have a decent idea of what's going on. Almost all of my shipped eggs are developing and I'll leave the few that aren't in for a bit longer just in case. The eggs I got from the farmer aren't seeming fertile. It looks like only 2 are developing but they are darker eggs so I could be wrong.

I'm really wishing my girls would start laying, it's never been this bad before. I haven't seen a single egg in 3 months from my 20 girls, it's unbelieveable!

I meant to post this several days ago, but just didn't get around to it. I candled my duck eggs and through out one...sooooo I just happened to be looking through the fridge see, and I saw a lovely, big, duck egg that was in the fridge. SO I just slipped it into my pocket and somehow it ended up in the incubator?? WEIRD, right?

I marked it so I could be sure and tell it apart from the rest of the eggies. It was refridgerated for a day 1/2, I think. I hope it hatches, if it does this may be one of the ducklings I keep. *evil grin*

Does this count for egg art? LOL

You need to change that to magic marker,

I might at that, however I've heard/read some things that certain types of markers are toxic, and when used to mark eggs the toxins can leek be absorbed into the egg or something. I'm not sure, I've just never used them for that reason. I suppose the same can be said for lead.

What a day! I decided to build out a hoop coop in the pouring rain (seems lately I either get to pick rain, COLD, or snow, so rain seemed warmer).... Moved my 30 Production Reds (actually most of these gals are super super dark mahogany which is nice to see from a hatchery), into this much larger coop. They are almost 11 weeks old and I wanted to move them to a different location then what their current coop is in for more winter sunlight to keep them laying longer in the winter.

So now 27 happy pullets are hanging with 3 very happy roosters!

And then I came in to take a shower and as I passed my incubator I smell a not so great smell coming from it. I gotta candle and figure out which one is the rotten egg! Any pointers for how to tell a rotten egg with candling? My longest egg in there is 14 day old turkey eggs and 5 day old chicken eggs (all for the NYD hatch).

If the egg is white/light colores, it will look cloudy inside, Ive had one that was green on the inside, I would suggest also sniffing the eggs one by one, dont put your nose to close at first though, you can always go back for a second sniff ;)

Sniff test has always been very reliable for us...there really is no mistaking the stinky one especially if you can smell it outside the bator already!
