4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

All depends on the hen....they are all individuals and the fact that you are in MN and it is winter will also have an affect. How old is she and did she go through a molt last fall before she sat on the clutch?
She is still very young herself! I got her as a chick last spring, so she's only 9 months old. She hasn't even gone through a molt yet... The rest of the chickens are doing pretty well laying. Besides Prim, there are 11 others, and I get between 6-10 eggs per day still...

In a related (kind of) question... I have often wondered... What is the proper age to start calling a pullet a hen, and a cockerel a rooster??

I have a question for those of you that have hatched under a broody hen before... I put Prim and her babies out in the main coop with the rest of the layers, and they are settling in, but they all hang out under the shelf with Prim. That's fine. I make sure they get food and they do mingle a bit. My question is... How long does it normall y take for the broody hen to start laying again?? Prim sat on her eggs for 3 weeks, now has raised them for 8 weeks, and seems to show no interest in visiting the nest boxes. It isn't a big deal at all to me, I'm just curious...
I have a broody hatching out in the coop now. I would imagine with it being so cold she will not start laying till she knows they will be fine with out her. Some will brood for months and months, other kick them to the curb in 4 weeks.

Cockerel to rooster and pullet to hen at one year of age.

Sounds like she just needs a bit more time before she returns to laying....it is still winter until March 20th!

Mine last broody didn't lay for 12 weeks after hatch. She was still caring for the babies.
