I have 25 acres, but my chickens have to share it with my 9 horses, 6 dogs, 5 cats, etc... I would be dangerous if I moved to a bigger property!! I would actually LOVE to have more land, but this is the place my (late) husband grew up on, and I just built my dream barn, so I'm not going anywhere...
(I still can't get used to calling him my "late" husband... After almost 3 years, he's still just my husband...
You must be an amazing woman to deal with that and still raise and enjoy your beautiful children and somehow find more love in your heart for caring for all your animals.
well its getting late, and i have a birthday party to attend to tomorrow. My 'Billy Boys' turn one tomorrow.
interesting story actually, our neighbor callde us saying his friend needed some kids gone thats mother had her bag stomped off by a horse ( YET THEY STILL BRED HER -_-) of course, i couldnt say no. that day we were on our way to our first goats, bottle feeding them since a few hours old. we only had to drive 2 hours to get them.
i remeber it was really muddy that day and the guys farm was a mud pit. we sunk to our knees in mud. ICK. but at least we reached the kids and Timmy had scours and refused to eat, apparently had to get tube fed? we almost didnt get him cuz we didnt want that problem but i figureed that billy needed a friend. well my grandma was over that time and she didnt even bother to hide her worries about him. just saying every tow minutes 'OHHHHH HES NOT GONNA MAKE IT
'
even though every feeding was a battle for a few weeks, we finally got him to accept this. when we laid sod down they would help us, by jumping all over and watering it
ohh since im so tired i wont say too much sorry for posting randomness, but i must go!
big day tomorrow!! cant wait to treat them to a treat!!
I candled a select few eggs this morning and I still can't see veining, but most of the eggs are dark... One of my mystery eggs was stuck to the turner and when I pulled it out, there was a small crack in the shell that I must have missed... It was leaking, so I didn't figure I could save it...
I decided to crack it open and there was what I hope was the beginning of veining. I'll have to post a pic when I get home, cuz I can't do it from my iPad.
It's fine to candle everyday, I do! I candled my first hatch more than once everyday and recieved a 95% hatch rate! 19 chicks out of 20 eggs! That short cooling period while you're candling is smiliar to when the mother hen gets off her nest to eat, drink, strech, and relive herself.
ARE you kidding me?? 190 posts since I was last on, last NIGHT??? man, I hope my once in a blue moon post gives me as small chance of the random posting contest, NOT!!! lol!!!
2 ganders would need to be split up during breeding season, but can free range as one large flock the rest of the year. I would hunt down a curly gander and put him with the smooth girl, the smooth gander can be with the two curly, or you can leave him with 1 curly and new gander with a curly and a smooth. I agree they are impossible to be mad at, silly little things.
