Im so excited !! My silkie rooster (the one in my avatar) is getting his back feathers back!
we went out one day shopping and came home to a coyote running off, he was standing there in our driveway. at first we were all like
ep.gif
cool! and we came inside and put away groceries and such, then suddenly thought 'that was coming from the henhouse'
th.gif
we looked and sure enough found silkie feathers scattered everywhere. we thought for sure he was gone, but kept looking. I kept thinking i heard faint little noises coming from somewhere, but thought i was just losing my mind. hmmm maybe not. After awhile of searching i gave up, and headed in the garage way, and there he was, hiding in the little corner of the garage was this really bloody and ripped up rooster. poor thing.

i took him in and started by putting neosporin and gauze on it, then left for the farm store. I cant remember what we bought, but its this gel stuff that you put on it, and it acts as a fake skin as the new one grows. honestly, i had no hope in his survival. His whole back had two bites taken out, as if being eaten alive, and the skin was off.

all that time he was the one needing to be worried about, he had one goal in mind, and that was to find his girl. he was trying to get away and calling for her, believe it or not, while i was holding him he crowed twice. i went and got her to put with him for the night, it couldnt hurt i thought.

this is a terrible photo of them cuddling together, reasurring eachother it was gonna be okay. and sure enough, it was! that was a month ago, and now he has pin feathers about to sprout some 'fur'

he is such a tough little dude.

What a beautiful story! Thanks for sharing! You should post this in the Short Story contest.

I need to post a picture of Drekkette. She's just about ready to move in with the rest of the Icelandic flock. She inherited that lovely blue.

I use the rubbermaid shelf liner. Easy to clean and makes a great grip for little toes.

Same here. I used to toss it until I realized it was washable. I wait until I have several icky, dirty pieces, then throw them in the washer with an old towel. I used to air dry it, but now throw it in the dry as well. I've been using the same pieces for over 6 mos. now.

Really? Wow, the money I could have been saving! Will be doing that from now on!

Hey all. If you need me for something, please check with one of the contest chairs. I've been at work all day and need to go back. (I've been off the clock most of the day though. :(

We're gearing up for a blizzard. 8-12 in of snow after freezing rain. Then 40 to 50 mph winds and I'm plowing for my boss tonight for the first time. I'm ready to say forget it.

Have fun chatting and pray that I don't lose power.

I found a really bad photo of my old flock! these were from 2-3 years ago. the little bantam roo got killed by his son, and one of the red ones (chloe, my very favorite) was killed by a hawk/owl. everybody else is still alive though!

whats this? Chloe! shes popping out of the shed we used ot keep their feed in, this is also how i discovered a HUGE nest in there, maybe 50-60 eggs? good grief.

snow, fun.
at least its not dry there! its as dry as a desert that hasnt gotten rain in years here. when you walk, you kick up dust. the grass is all dry and brittle, the cows have been living off hay for awhile. send that snow our way! we will be thankful for any type of wetness to get us out of this drought.
