4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

My first egg has pipped!!!! I was dead asleep...I have no idea how but it must have woke me up...something did...I got up, went to the bathroom...got something to drink...I got back into bed..didn't even look inside the incubator..and I heard it...a very faint sound...I questioned whether or not it was real or imagined...

I turned off the noise machine I have next to my door...Normally it is nececarry to keep the sound from carrying throughout the house. I heard it..a peep! I looked inside and there it was...my first egg has a little pip!!!!

Cross your fingers everyone!!!

Well, now I can't wait until spring! I'm hoping I'll have my own eggs to hatch then! I won't be able to join the Easter hatch because we'll be out of town, but I hope to hatch right after Easter :) This was fun, and hopefully my last hatch that required shipped eggs! LOL.

I've seen my babies eat, but not drink. I figure they know where it is (not a big box!) and will do just fine. I need to find a bigger box than my nesquick box 'cause I bet in 4-5 days they won't be able to stand in there anymore... can't think of anything though.... maybe I'll just go with a cardboard box then??Tthats what isie they are nice for a little insulation factor and can be thrown away..... so perfect!I am like yu cant wait to hatch my own and mine are so close to laying !! Exciting..
Cardboard boxes. yes ..some insulation and disposible LOVE IT!
Me too with the no more shipped.Hope to do my own....BUT ..Always seems to be one more color or breed i want I cant find here ..HAHA

I'll catch up tomorrow, but I have 2 out and 4 pips still. I'm plus one chicks for the day with the some of the same 4 pips left. Good luck everyone still waiting. And congrats to those whose hatch are done or those that have one a contest.

I had one go with that little "star crack " for at least 15 hours maybe more i thought it was a goner ..Didint do one thing for all that time but this little crack...then ...in an hours time he zipped and out!!

Thank you! I need about 4 of these! Come make me a couple?
Yaaaay! I just watched my second baby hatch! He was a trooper, and zipped in under 15 minutes. Right now he's trying to come to terms with a world bigger than 3 inches long, and his older brother is helping out by stepping on him and peeping loudly. Oh siblings. :p

Well I am skipping over 900 posts and just wanted to post that the silver pencil rocks I had that went into lock down have all died. One looks like it died about the time the went into lockdown, one was upside down in the shell and died without pipping, and the third is the real puzzler. It is in perfect position, beak lined up right under the air cell, it just never pipped into the aircell. membrane was nice and moist, everything looked good, the chick was just dead.

I am sorry not to hang out, but it so depressing seeing everyone's chicks. I am going to go play with some of my older chicks.

I started with 9 duck eggs, 11 chicken eggs and 40 quail. I have one duckling and ten quail. There are others due on Friday, but I'm not sure how they'll do, since the air cells are so badly messed up. Better news, my turkey eggs are developing. Going to auction next week to try to get a new pekin male and sell off some chicks.
I wish we had an auction close by that I could take extra chicks and such to. Lucky!
So far we have 68 quail (from 100 shipped eggs!), and three chicks. The quail hatched a day later than expected so I am thinking our temps ran a little low.

I haven't been able to keep up with all these posts.LOL.I tried for awhile yesterday and last night but just couldn't keep up with who had what hatching and when.I signed up just to be "hatching along" with everyone else, not even trying to win anything. It is so exciting to read about all the babies being hatched.I don't know when the final count for all that hatched will be.I wanted to add what I have so far.I have 21 chicks hatched out and dry.I have 2 chicks pipped right now.And I have 2 turkeys pipped now and 1 that is pipped internally. So far I haven't lost any that pipped.I do have 8 chicks and 1 turkey that appear to be quitters.I'll leave those for now and give them a extra day or two.I am charging my camera now and will add pictures later on this evening.I got some of my blues I wanted so bad plus maybe a blue splash or two.And I got several blacks and a couple chocolates.I had 51 chicks and 3 turkey poults,1 week to 3 weeks old, before these hatched.Plus I have 25 chicks that are 5 weeks old.Lets see......thats 127 chicks under 6 weeks old plus the 3 turkey poults.Wow,this chicken math is kinda getting out of hand around here.I have made myself stop saving eggs to hatch and will try not to hatch anything for at least one month.LOL.Wonder how that will go?I still have 9 turkey eggs that are growing that should hatch in about 2 weeks.I am wondering if I haven't aready got this hatching addiction thingy.Oh well,I have room for them and I do love them so much.
I'll try to get pictures up soon of my NYDH babies.Congrats to all!!!!!!!!!!

Do you think that these little serama chicks will be ok with the button chicks , the buttons are so tiny but they will be 2 days older and serama arnt full size chicks or even normal sized banty chicks there not much bigger then the cot chicks I dont think??
I bet they'd be okay, as long as the Seramas didn't bully them.
here are my surprise babies. they were 2 days early. They are bbs silkies from a blue rooster over a blue hen, I think that I have black, blue and splash.

What great pictures! thanks for sharing

awww so cute .., you hatch so many what do you do with all the little buggers. theres a post in this forum asking about plans for a bator that can fit 3 turners how many can yours hold? THank you for posting a pic.
I know you were not talking to me..But I have ads and such on Craiglist once I know how many chicks/ducklings I have and they usually sale like hot cakes!
I really like the SPs. I have two boys that are about 4 months old and very fun birds. Full of personality but gentle. They actually 'knocked' on the front door this am because I was tardy getting the treats out to them and they follow me around the yard. I was watching the babies hatch! When I got the eggs for the NYD hatch, I picked up two 1 month old babies that are looking like girls. They are also sweet and calm. Can't wait to see how these turn out!

Seems i go on and on about this but i have had 12 hatches and 11 were shipped. They are so scrambled in shipping 4 is good well at least par. 3-5 is my normal hatch Had one shocker 10 hatched of 14. 3 got zero!!!
Some ppl think they are ok if they see movement early on but no ...Some die later from shipping too. Read in some professors study this is true
This last hatch i got 3 and candled more yesterday i think 4 or 5 look good day 12. Will see what hatches day 21...
I feel lucky if i get 2 from shipped, As I said on some thread earlier over 2 is gravy with shipped for me anyway but icontinue ordering from BYC and Ebay as i cant seem to find the colors and breeds i want in my state.
Local and your own ....usually .way better hatches .
Well glad to know that I am not alone. I just wanted to add some silkies and this seemed like an "easy" way. Wrong....

I knew shipped eggs had a lower hatch rate, didn't know that they would be this low. Always learning I guess. These are some expensive chicks I have in there.

As far as mine own eggs go, my last hatch wasn't that great either. I have an awesome little incubator. Temp is steady as a rock. It is a forced air and runs at 100 all the time. The humidity is easy to control and I can get it high easy enough, but I have been running it low about 30 the first 18 days and then up to 50+ the last 3. I was a little alarmed when I had 4 chicks from my last hatch dead in the shell. That really is a new problem for me.

I have never turned eggs more than twice a day during the week as I work and I am not home to turn them, but for 4 years it has never been a problem. So I don't know what went wrong with my own eggs. Of course they were the first eggs that I have hatched that were not "mutt". They were CA Grays. Maybe the mutt chicks are just hadier.

Well, we started out with 24 eggs in the mail. Six didn't make it through shipping. 10 either weren't fertile or stopped developing somewhere along the line. As of right now we have one lonely little splash Silkie and none of the other seven eggs have given any indication of pipping. She may be a house chicken and hang out with the Corgi :)
Oh thats bad I hate when i get just one!! Shipped is always so low hatch well a few ppl say they arent but most are. She will be spoiled as you say ...however you COULD check Craigs or chicken swap on facebook in your town and see if anyone has a new chiick for sale to be friends with.....An option anyway

I have a suspicion some do better than others incubating
.Also the shipped.I
had the one as i said got 10 think somehow that gene they had from the chickens they came from just wast prone to get scrambled as easily and as you said all things were the same for them and the other hatchings a day or 2 apart from that one where i got 1. 3. 5, 5 and then this 10 ... 3, then zero!!!
all within a few days
Go figure
