yep maxed out a eco 20 with three once lol, the turner was NOT happy, ended up hand turning just like our goose eggs

You've had a really rough go of it

As for Marans - I would agree that because of the difficulty in seeing into the egg, it is probably not the best choice for beginners - that would extend to any breed with coloured eggs though IMO. So far my Maran chicks are quite docile compared to my Ameraucana cross chicks ... but that may change as they age. I did a bit of sniffing the internet too and found a lot of folks saying that Marans hatch late or that they had shrinkwrap issues ... now this could be due to incubation issues, but if all things are equal and all other breeds hatch on time without issue it seems odd that the Marans hatch late.

Ah, Chick B, the very aggressive one who basically killed W is Maran over Ameraucana !

so perhaps that cross is more, aggressive in general, at least more so than other chicks I've encountered. Chick K is pure Maran, and equally sized but even so I had to separate them for about the first 8 hrs to keep B from also killing K while K was drying and learning to walk. I never expected to need to do that, I know sometimes they hurt each other accidental, but B was really being very deliberate and persistent to a degree I was shocked about and again, I've delt w/ half wild hog piglets so I know it isn't always sweetness & light in nature and this chick B was intense. I'm hoping the upside is being a very healthy robust chicken who will free-range well :)

& btw B is also the one of the 3 I had to assist, the one who started w/ a hernia & I let drag the half eggshell he was still connected to w/ red veins for 6 full hrs. As of yesterday you can't even tell there was ever a hernia , maybe mean, but also robust...found the food figured out the water and has been jumping on things and trying to fly around way more than any other 24 hr old chicks I've ever seen.

I have 8 Maran eggs still in the bator, will float test tomorrow.

& Call Me Crazy, but I have 8 Duck eggs (plus a few chicken eggs a nice person gave me ) which got picked up today. We are going to modify the coolerbator tomorrow then TRY AGAIN
I figured if I set the duck eggs tomorrow they (might) hatch for ground hogs day. Yep, I am not gonna give up!

i would probably hand turn them just because i would like the turner alive for the other light weight chicken eggs, lol

The bator is all cleaned out and ready to go again!! But I don't have a roo anymore, so no fertile eggs for me for a while...
:-(

I wish i could incubate, but i cant until spring. with a vacation coming we are trying not ot max out. my two grandmas (who will be housesitting the house together, yay! bonding time for them, lol. they are good friends :) will be house-farm sitting!! that means feeding and collecting eggs for 130 chickens, i envy them

Sounds like fun!! What kind of dog??

My wonderful BIL takes care of my farm whenever I have to go... I just keep adding critters...

I'm thinking I may bring the incubator to work and incubate there next time... Then the other girls can join in the fun!!!

So my 14 hour old is officially the youngest broody ever!! LMAO she keeps sitting on top of the one who just hatched!
haha, my silkie keeps doing that on my little one that has the straddle leg. but she is just a chick, and gets distracted and goes off to eat often. lol.
though she's two days old. :)
