4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

THANK God I got a call to push my live order back until Feb13th!! what a relief!! But I did add to my order LOL last night 3am thermo said 3 degrees!!
Really? Even with the discount? I would love to push mine back, but I thought the discount was for the January 23rd hatch only?

Temperatures have stayed below 0 all of this week except today, it's currently 15 degrees but I don't know how long this "warmer" weather is going to last. Hopefully I'll be able to drive directly to the sorting center tomorrow so that the chicks will only have one day in the mail system. They haven't notified me that they have been shipped yet, but they should be shipped today.

We don't buy the layer pellets anymore (too many roosters, chicks, and old hens to risk the excessive calcium), but when we did; there was this one brand that I swear smelled like apples. It honestly smelled really good! I try to alternate brands to give the chickens some variety, but I bought this brand more often because it was the same price and smelled better. Maybe I'm just crazy, but since my chickens love apples, I'm going to assume they liked that feed better as well. I can't remember what brand it was...

And I agree that they are trying to hide. I was searching the web for a good hour before I asked on here, I couldn't find anything! Normally an address is simple to find. The only information that I could come up with is that there is a St. Paul sorting facility. I was honestly starting to believe it didn't exsist! Then Ron shared that link which had a ton of information. It's nuts!
Yah, I just opened the new bag up and it smells like it did on the outside... Only real difference in ingredients that I could find was Old / New Wheat Bran / Wheat Milrun, Hydrolized animal and vegetable fat / vegetable oil, and apparently the new one has artificial flavoring. It looks totally different, very dark compared to the old one. Also, there are differences in the vitamins and minerals, but those all have weird names, and I wouldn't know what's better for the birds, LOL. We shall see after it is fermented whether or not they like it??

The government is bizarre! They're always renaming sections, etc... I think it's just so they can expand and have new administrative heads...etc... You know the German post privatized after the reunification, around the mid 1990's and it actually makes a profit now! DHL used to be the state run postal service of Germany!

Hello everyone! I have a question. I changed roosters. How long do I have to wait till I can hatch eggs from the one that is with the hens now? I heard and read it takes up to 2 weeks before you can hatch eggs and still not be fertile from other roo.what is you guys opinion ?

Well, my rooster died a few years back and I was still getting fertile eggs 2 weeks after his death even though he was the only rooster at that time so definitely longer than 2 weeks. I would wait 4 weeks to be on the safe side. I've heard that others wait even longer.

I would wait 2-3 weeks, after a 10 days or so, if your new rooster is breeding the hens, the hens will have more of the new roosters stuff then the old rooster, so you will be more likely to hatch chicks from him

Hi NYDH folks,

My 2 NYDH chicks are doing well, have gotten huge, are almost totally feathered out - the pure Maran has a stripe of tiny feathers down each leg.

I have a Question -- I've got another round of eggs in the bator (yep, addicted, guilty) Day 18 , & one of the Duck eggs looks maybe to be TWINS??!!
I've never had a double yolk duck eggs (these are not from my ducks, they are pure Welsh Harlequin)

When I candled Day 10 I saw 2 black spots, looked odd but I kind decided it was just a trick of the light.
Day 17 , last night, 2 distinct moving blobs, which appear to move independently, & look diff. than the other 5 duck eggs.
?? Is that twins??

I watched the twin chick video Sally Sunshine put up here during the NYDH, anyone have anything else to add? This is *ducks* so anything different?

Thanks!

I think you need to start documenting and taking pictures..or even a video of the double movement.
