4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

Sure wish I could find some Silver Laced Wyandottes for this hatch. Not having much luck on my first hatch so I need some good hatching vibes for the Hatch-A-Long!

Aw, I wish I could join in on the fun! I'll still be checking in here daily to see how things are going. It'd be nice if there were a contest or two for those of us that can't hatch. (I think they had a few in the Easter hatch.) The weasel is thieving the eggs I do get from the RIRs since I can't get in there daily do to the evil roo (I'll be fixing that problem soon.) and all the eggs we get after both problems are fix are promised to people my mom works with. The games aren't laying and won't be until spring.

With any luck I'll be in on the Easter hatch next year. I wish I could get some eggs from this hatch, but it's hard to convince my dad that another dual purpose breed is a good idea and mom really doesn't want me hatching anymore. (At all....Ever again.)

Good luck everyone!

There are SLW hatching eggs for sale all over. Did you have particular preferences on price, location, show quality versus breeder quality versus pet quality etc?

I found some. I was hoping to get some from the Foley line but ended up finding them somewhere else. They won't be breeder quality but that's ok.

Well I am officially 'in'. I just am not sure what I am going to set, might just be my own eggs. Might do an experiment and collect for 2 weeks, dating the eggs each day. Then keeping track of any duds and their age as I can't find any studies about how quickly age over 7 days affects hatchability.

This sounds very fun, I'm ordering some eggs from ebay but they will probably arrive too quickly. I will be in if my hens start laying again, I haven't had an egg in 2 weeks! and there are 12 of them! So if I wanted to have them lay a few eggs for this hatchalong, how soon should I turn on the lights. Is it an automatic insntict or will it take a week of lights before the eggs start coming. I will be turning them off once I have collected my eggs. Also, what times do you reccommend turning them on in the mornings and at night?

I've never used lights on my hens but I have read that you should only turn them on in the early morning hours, early enough that you have 14 hour days total. If you turn them on at night and the hens are off the roosts when the lights go out then they freak out and can't find their roosts.
