Who are you getting your Serama eggs from? Mine are coming from Crazypetlady. I've wanted to hatch some of her eggs since I fist saw a pic of her birds during the Easter hatch this year.
I've done it and someone tried to do it during the Easter hatch. There's also a thread where someone did it. One of the main problems is that it becomes uncomfortable after the first few hours.

I don't know if she can, but I plan on getting some from bhep, if possible, and bnewns just pm'd me that she might have a few for me. bnewns lives close by so they'd have a better chance to hatch. Hopefully I'll get some from both

It is really cold for chicks. I normally never have chickens in the house. For this special event I am making part of the basement a brooder for a few months. It is not going to be fun when they are about 6-8 weeks old. I hope by than I will have a new area done in coop that can keep them warm. I am insulating a special area for chicks. I am more worried about lack of sunlight in the basement and no exposure to the ground. Guess time will tell how this works out. I will have to make sure to bring in soil, dirt, etc.


 

can you tell me why the dirt is important?  I've never heard that comment before.  We raise the chick in old leaky water troughs in the garage.  There is some sun light from the window in the door, but no soil.

I'm guessing it's to boost their immune system, but I've brooded chicks in my basement before with no dirt and they grew up perfectly healthy.

I put the chicks on the ground and free range. I do not contain my birds. They have to have resistance or when I do put them on the ground with out exposure you can get into problems with all sorts of things. Bringing in dirt and straw also from the coop with give them a boost so they do not have to go threw such a hard change in a cold climate. It will also eliminate the chance of them getting any form of cocci.

I free ranged my chickens too, I didn't have any issues. My basement wasn't finished so it's wasn't like they were living in a pristine environment. This time the are going to be brooded in the woodshed which has a dirt floor.

Hahaa, I've seen those bra threads! If I tried it, my egg would get smooshed on night one. My subconcious thinks sleeping is an excersize routine.

I just bought a trial pack of fertile eggs from Whole Foods, and checked them for fertility. Every single egg had the infamous bullseye! Wow!!

(okay okay, I set four. But I promise not to set anymore until the 11th! I swear!)
