5 1/2 week old chicks moving out....

I lock them in the coop for 2 days and nights before letting them into the run. Then they get attached/accustomed to their new home.

I was originally going to do that but then felt bad because it's so hot and humid here. I wanted them to be comfortable while making the move from inside OUR house to THEIR new house...lol. They keep going up and down the ramp to check out where they spent their first night outside, so hopefully this evening with a little bribery in the form of meal worms they will quickly go up.:fl

Night #2 and I had to physically put them in the coop...tried treats and by the time I got one heading up the ladder the one ahead of it was jumping back down. I closed them in and left them chirping like screaming two year olds...:(
I will go back out in about 30 minutes to check on them. *This is after a day of up and down the ladder with me finally closing the door to keep them OUT in the run because it was cooler down below...I guess they are thinking “what the heck!?!??!”

I shut my door at night and leave open during the day to the hut. It’s good practice if they try going up and down on own. Sometimes they just want to rest in shade in nice cozy place. Make sure hut windows open for ventilation except if raining. It’s ok to have curiosity about their surroundings. Don’t worry they will get over being put in the hut at night. Just keeping showing them what they are supposed to do. I would still put crumble on the ramp at night and try and coax them up. Put them up if they don’t. They will learn. I think that would have made a cute picture the ramp congestion problem. I had a few that if a few went up and the rest stayed out, they all would go back out a little longer if I let them. Josephina tends to rule the flock here, if she goes everyone goes. It’s important to find early leaders and help them do it. The rest follow in few minutes. Be patient they will get it. They are so cute when so young.

Night #3 was considerably better! Whew!!! It’s Sunny who is my smallest by quite a bit (she had a beak issue and hasn’t caught up size wise yet) who is the leader in EVERYTHING! First to go up in to the coop and practice coming down the ramp...first to fly over to the roost and back to the doorway...first to discover the bliss of a dirt bath...and today she was the first to fly out to the roost after I had been gone running errands and she heard my voice...she is my special girl. Tonight she was first up into the coop and after a few minutes of the other three chirping like crazy they followed her up.
