Rumplessness is required for showing. With the genetics of Araucana you always have a chance of a tail or partial tail. A good bird with a tail should not be discarded as a breeder. Rumplessness is dominant so breeding a tailed bird to a rumpless one you will get mostly rumpless offspring.

ETA: Too many generations of breeding rumpless to rumpless will cause short backs. I'm dealing with that in my black line now, so I actually NEED to throw in a tailed bird.

Oh thanks. I didn't know if tail or rumples was dominant so want sure. But like you said you shouldn't cull a bird for one minor defect.

It's a cockerel! His comb hasn't grown much but his face has reddened. Hopefully his comb will stay nice and short. He also *tried* to crow this morning.
