Gammas Bearded Babies
Crossing the Road
Little baby ate pretty good today...finally ate some wet mash even! I moved it to where she stands on top of the feed bowl and she ate some. She drank quite a bit of sugar water. Two things I would do with a FTT chick like yours. Warm sugar water and coconut oil. Both need to be stuffed into the tiny beak. Can you find help?
The baby needs glucose desperately. And it needs hydration. This sugar water, with Nutri-drench or Poultry Cell, needs to be syringed directly into the crop. To do that, you need to hold the chick in one hand while holding the beak open. Perhaps a helper could perform this task with two hands while you syringe the sugar water and vitamins into the crop. See the photo below where the syringe needs to be placed in the right side of the tiny throat. After each syringe dose, let the chick close its beak to swallow any in the throat. Try to get a tablespoon into the chick each hour.
The second thing is coconut oil. Chill the oil until solid, then shave off tiny slivers and place them one at a time inside the beak on the tongue. Let the chick swallow after each sliver. Get a teaspoon full into the chick. This should do the job better than molasses which acts more to stimulate the intestines to empty than to lubricate the digestive tract and soften the contents.View attachment 3316485
Now she's trying hard to poop and just cries. I tried every way I could think of to get the coconut oil in her beak. She's got a lot of fight left in her. I got 2 little bits into her beak after a long fight with her.
I wonder if I could just put it in their mash?
