5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Ron, count me in. I won't be going anywhere for the next few weeks.

The snow and ice this past few days prevented a trip to SaveMart for a dozen fertile brown eggs (and now i haven't any car to go get some tomorrow) so i am going to put three of my home flock eggs under Sparkle the broody House Silkie. She's been brooding a single, infertile egg for three weeks, so hopefully she will go the full course again. As a HouseChicken, she has been able to get more and healthy treats than the outside flock.

Eggs I gathered from the Ranch flock probably froze - at least one actually cracked from being frozen - so no small eggs. Just three eggs from LadySpeckle (Speckled Sussex, duh) and I don't want Sparkle to have to deal with too many LF chicks. It will be interesting to see who has been courting LadySpeckle most successfully: Carl or Domino. Don't think the Splash Orp "Ralph" has been able to sneak anything past the boss or second in command roo.

I'll have to go back and find the participant spreadsheets to add my stuff.

Let me know how many you set!

I have a little Brinsea Mini Advance. I looked for "plugs" but dont see them. Do they even have plugs or air vents?
The Octagon has a vent control. I keep mine open.

So few Brahmas

.

It's like well they have really just started laying, so pullet eggs. I'm just taking a chance with these.
Truthfully, I think they are hatchery Brahmas, they look fairly well, but really need some feathering work on their feet. l will be searching for some chicks or eggs in the spring to give 'em a boost.

There have to be air holes or the embryo can't breathe.
There aren't plugs, just air holes.

I found this in the Mini Advance manual:
"~Be sure to clean the air vent holes to keep them clear. There are two small holes on the bottom “skirt” of the lid and one on the back of the clear part of the lid above the level of the fan cover."

I was thinking vent holes like the Little Giant, the way you're supposed to control the humidity opening up one or the other.. But thanks for the info, now I'm going to have to go look at mine and see if I can find them. I'm trying to do everything right/perfect this time, I've had my Little Giant running for two days now, the temp is PERFECT.. both vent holes are plugged and actually have condensation on the inside of the viewing windows.. Had a heck of a time getting the humidity up the last time following the instructions that came with it "Remove Both Vent Plugs".. Bought an egg turner, as I think my handling the eggs was the bane of my last hatch.. but the good thing is, this hatch there will only be 5 eggs in the Little Giant, and 7 in the Mini.. I'm hoping for a VERY successful hatch this time, our 7 year old son LOVES his ducks, and the fox got our two Khakis..
