5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

NYDH PO Miracle -- Eggs shipped from CA MONDAY arrived TN today noon local.
Outside of box had big dent/gash
but inside no cracked shells, letting them rest for a few hrs but will set tonight w/ pictures.
So I'll be IN for a slightly overfilled LG...details & pics tonight.

& I'll still hang out w/ the late setters/hatchers, infact if too many of these are duds then
I'll sneak a few more eggs in later to go along w/ the late setters at the end of the wk, b/c I got 2nd egg from my main layer flock today,
& the new CL Roo over 2 EE pullets could provide a few fertile eggs starting tomorrow...

Anyway, loving the pictures, GOOD LUCK everyone & I'll post my set pic. in few hrs. when I put them in the batter :)

I just set 60 eggs. 1 odd pure serama, 2 OE mix, 3 EE mix,10 bantam, and the rest assorted LF x bantam mixes. This is Daryl the

roo for them all (except the serama). This is the first time for hatching Daryl's offspring and I can't wait to see what I get. A few of my eggs are 13 days old do they have a chance of hatching or are they to old?
Daryl is GORGEOUS!!!

And, yes, they do have a chance of hatching.

Total of 38 eggs set. 15 Marans from Chiqita and 21 of my mutts

On a sad note, I failed to shut one of the coops last night and this morning found my head roo dead in the doorway. I think an owl must have attempted entry and Good King Henry fought him off but was killed in the fight. Thankfully everyone else was OK, but it feels terrible that it was all my fault. King Henry was the very first egg I ever hatched in the 2011 NYD hatch.

Oh no! I am so sorry about King Henry. :hugs

So your heat is on?? Good, hope it stays on for the next three weeks! Sorry about your .. dropped one. :( Looks like you have plenty more. :)
Nope. Still no heat. I really wish they'd hurry and get it fixed. I am freezing my butt off! If it was bigger, I think I'd be tempted to crawl into the incubator and be toasty with the eggs.

Our heat is out (gas company has some kind of problem and whole town has no gas right now).  So here I am trying to get my eggs all set to go into the bator while my fingers are frozen and I dropped one.  It smashed to bits on the floor. :hit [/CONTENTEMBED]

I am a few hundred posts behind, needed to comment here... please don't beat yourself up, everyone's dropped an egg at one time or another. It'll all be fine. BIG rule in incubating...better too cool then to have cooked your eggs.

Nice seeing you over here. Not setting any Serama for the hatch?

I will share that I would REALLY like to find some fertile Maran Eggs.. I have EE's two current layers, plus a young roo with 7 young hens, but REALLY like the idea of those dark chocolate eggs..
Really good choice. My marans are my favorite eggs hands down! I have all of the other colors, and still none can beat those beautiful brown eggs!

I see Marans and Ameraucana's

Mee Too!
Quote: She is pretty, she looks like mine. Mine's an EE and I have no clue what color egg she lays, I think she hides them.

Me too! I just sit on my lawn chair on a nice warm sunny day, with a good book and a drink right in the middle of the yard, while they free range all around me.

its extremely relaxing!! until they wander too far and you have to heard them back home lol. I try not to bring my cell phone out with me, or at least just leave it in my pocket, its nice to spend some time away from the world :)

I love sitting out in nice weather and watching "chicken tv". They are so fun to watch. I find it very relaxing and they make me laugh all the time.
In the summer, I don't bother coming in at all. No joke, unless it's raining but even then I'll sit in the gazebo. I love watching my chickens!

I do same I also take a bag or cup of grapes and make them jump into my lap for the treat they love them.

This is why I love BYC... I feel NORMAL here!

The neighbors are always looking my way when they drive by and I'm with the chickens... I tell myself they're admiring my beautiful chickens.

I just went to close my coops for the night, and I HAVE A BROODY! My Silkie hen is sleeping on the nest. I am going to fence her off and give her fresh eggs tomorrow so she'll also be participating in the hatch-a-long, even though she'll be a day late
