5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Make my official count 28 instead of 27. My EE decided to gift me with another egg this afternoon,so I went ahead and put it in the bator since it wasn't long after I set the others. So I have 13 Lav Orp, 12 SFH and 3 RIR/EE.

The last set of keets I had I bonded to my sheep. They would follow them all around and pick the seeds and straw out of their fleeces. In the winter they would roost on their backs to keep their feet warm. I was at the next door neighbors and they alarmed me to the fact that 5 dogs had slipped in the field and were chasing the sheep. In the wild guineas bond with elephants, keep them free of insect parasites and the elephants keep them from being eaten by lions. If your are free ranging the guineas it keeps them alive longer to bond them with a grazing animal. Sheep and goats don't faze big predators and hawks and eagles but foxes, possoms and raccoons don't like to approach them.
I had no idea guineas bonded with grazing animals! I bet they would be great in a cow field.

OK I am setting tonight. I had to be sure my temps wouldn't jump too much. I have got to notch it down 2 degrees but that should do it.

My Raven laid 7 terracotta eggs in 7 days ranging from one that is 63 grams to two that are 68 grams. (and she is a pullet)

My Cinder laid 5 olive eggs in 7 days from ranging 52 to 56 grams. (she is a pullet too.)

So that gives me a dozen to set.

This is Raven

This is Cinder.

I need to get a new photo of Rufus. My last pic of him was before he put on his adult plumage.

I am supposed to get 12 quail eggs in by Saturday. I checked last night and they were in Houston, TX.

It has been a busy day of setting eggs!

Remember to post a picture for the Hatch rate contest. I also need the number set so that I can come up with the number of egg set for that contest.

Post on this thread or send me a pm with the number of eggs set. I will post a pdf list of what I have later so that you can make sure I recorded your amount correctly.

They all look very nice!

My blue wheaten Ameraucana pullet just gave me another egg, which was still warm so I could just pop it into the incubator with the others that I started at 10:30 this morning

So my count has changed from 10 to 11 eggs so I have attached a new picture of the 11 eggs

Well I have to give a shout out to a National Geographic special I saw in my teens for the information on wild guineas. I have never seen anything written about it in keeping domestic flocks but when I got the keets I remembered the show and decided to give it a try.

Huh. I can not believe I didn't even think of the NYD hatch until today. Looked at the calendar and my first thought was "Dec. 11th, hmm...isn't that set day for NYD hatch?" OK, keep in mind that Dec. 10th was my wedding anniversary and I didn't remember THAT until hubby said something.

Anyway, looks like I'm missing NYD this time around. My birds are all together for this bitter cold snap upon us, and I've got maybe a dozen eggs on the counter which may be pure or mixed, some of which have cracks from the cold. SOoooo, wah wah wah.

Have a good hatch, everyone!
