5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Well I only got 4 eggs today... I usually get 11. I keep a heat lamp on them at night which is a normal light color, not red. Not really sure why they didn't lay toady. Weather has been in the 50's this week with the low being not under 40. Food has been the same. Fodder and layer. The water was empty yesterday but hadn't been empty long. Any ideas as to why they didn't lay? If they keep that up there is no way I will be able to fill two incubators...

They will do that sometimes. Something may have spooked them last night.

Well went out this morning and had 9 eggs. Thank goodness! I need this hatch to go smoothly as our community neighbors are buying too many eggs that we can't supply them anymore. If we can't supply them I'm afraid they will not come back to buy again. We keep telling them we are working on getting more hens.

That is great news!

We had high winds for the past two days. Three people were killed in Northern California and lots of trees were blown over. There was a Mini Tornado type of event in a little Town called Nice that damaged a bunch of houses.

I only collected 8 eggs yesterday but today I have been hearing the happy singing of laying hens. My Olive Eggers have already laid two this morning! And they are huge after molting and very pretty.



They weigh 65 and 66 grams which is extra large! I hope they keep laying for the NYD Hatch!

i wish i had a bator and my pullets were laying for longer:/ theyve only been laying since monday and ive heard hatching pullet eggs is a challenge. working on getting the genesis 1588 bator from gqf. is there another hatch along i could participate in in the future?? maybe easter??

I think there are 'unofficial' hatch a longs pretty much every month and I do think they have a 'big' one at Easter too.

Yay VERY nice olive eggs. I cant wait til my OEs start laying, one is so close she is very red in the face.

My BCM is still laying. I wish my Blue was laying but I will take the Black for the NYDH. Here are her eggs

There is an Easter Hatch along as well as a cinco de mayo turkey hatch along(other poultry allowed in this one also)

Last year Happy Chooks hosted the Easter hatch. There is also a Mothers Day hatch and a Turkey hatch a long. The Monthly hatch a longs are fun too and sometimes there are just "I set on" hatches.

All of them are fun too.
