5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Is anyone else hatching a bantam breed?? I love my tiny chickens. :)  Hoping to find some bantam EEs for my spring hatching.

I'll be hatching bantam wyandottes. Blue laced reds, silver laced and chocolates. This will be something new for me as I usually hatch and raise large fowl.

Oh Chocolates... Im jealous. I want chocolate chickens so bad. Chocolate Orps would be great. Maybe one day when I have more space.

The fridge is a bad idea because of the low humidity--frost free and all that. Away from drafts like air conditioning is best.

I keep them in an egg flat tilted a bit and give them a half turn a couple of times a day. It is best to keep them in a humid place in your house.

Great, thank you

What color Silkies do you raise?

I have one pen covered by a Blue cock bird, he is with 2 Blacks, 1 light and 1 dark Partridge. The other pen is covered by a Black (likely split to Lavender) cock bird, he is with a Splash, Porcelain, and mismarked Partridge - she has the dark head but the rest of her looks more like a buff. The chicks I've hatched from the first pen have been mainly dark Blues and some Splash and Black, and from the second pen I just started hatching, I have 3 that will probably be Splash although they are just a week to 3 weeks old. Right now they look very silvery, have to wait a little while to see how they feather out. The hens in the second pen aren't a year old yet, they hatched in February and only started laying 2 months ago.

Im hatching silkies with this hatch along. A little nervous to raise silkies in the cold weather we get her in NH but if my tiny Japanese Bantams can survive the winters I can manage silkies too. I love bantams Id like TONS more but DH says they are "worthless" :( He thinks that because they lay bite size eggs. I like to remind him that the bantams are our best layers. Im getting 3 a day from the 6 of them. While I am only getting 1 LF egg a day from the 18 LF chickens.
This is true for me too! My bantams are laying like crazy, yet the LF are hit or miss. Love my bantams!
