5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I use an auto turner until lock down then lay them down on the side( the side they like) for hatch. I haven't tried a carton before.
I like the carton because the chicks that hatch first do not mess much with the chicks still hatching.

Hatcheries hatch like this because studies have shown that it increases the hatch rate.

Clean up is easier too since a bunch of the hatching junk is in the egg carton already.

. We got White, Blue, Black, Splash and Paint Silkies. These were a gift for my 11year old DD. She was so excited opening them all up so careful so she didn't shake them. She is asking to put the incubator in her room so she can hatch them. I think I just might do it.

Here is my DD with her eggs for the hatch along
Awesome! Congrats! I think that hatching eggs is such a great experience for kids.

What a great idea! Think I am going to try this as I cannot fit the diy turner into my styro-incubator without the eggs being very close to the heating element so I will just hand turn them and use this cartoon hatch method at lockdown!! Love all the great ideas I'm getting from this hatch-a-long!

I'll have to give it a try. Would the turner work in place of a tray?

The only problem i have with using cartons is that then chicks play king of hill and i worry about them sitting on one that is trying to get out. That said i still use them i just mpve them off eggs or out of bator if they cause problems.

Usually at the end of a set I have 3 bators I use one for lock down, one for pipped eggs and one for a 48 hr brooder. That way older chicks can't step on slower babies. I'll give the carton thing a try this time.

ugh i have 6 eggs from my chickens but i orded some and hoping the come tomorrow :( oh well first time hatching eggs so this will be fun wondering what my amercaunas /banty cochin will look like lol

If you're getting them from DMdrippy, have no fear, those eggs are wrapped TIGHT, I got my Rhodebars from her and broke one myself just trying to unwrap the un naturally strong bubble wrap. I should have taken pics...

You got yours? Mine haven't come yet..thought they would today. :(
